    Bullets can do crazy things

Thought I would share this story with you guys, my friend and I were hunting ground squirrels on his farm. We decided to use my 300 blk with extremely quiet bullets first so that the squirrels wouldn't run away at first.

First off here is my load:

    230 grain cast lead bullet
    1.0 grain of 700X
    cci mag primer

430 feet per second average with 22fps deviation
Around 90 ft pounds of energy (about twice what a .22lr makes)

Anyway, we had the high ground and were shooting into a valley with a backstop. I took the first shot, the squirrels were about 70-80 yards away.

The shot dropped right where I was aiming but missed the squirrel by maybe an inch or two. The round then bounced off the ground twice flew at maybe a 45 degree angle and preceded to make a crazy loud buzzing sound (made when a bullet tumbles) flew about 120 yards further down range (and 40 yards higher!) , and hit my friends metal barn leaving a dent in the side.

Of course no one was even nearly injured because we always know what is beyond our targets and before hand have warned everyone near by of what out intentions were.

In short: A 230 grain bullet traveling at 430fps has a potentially lethal distance of about 200 yards AFTER A RICOCHET!

    Morals of the story are:

    1. Bullets can do some crazy stuff after they leave the barrel!

    2. Make sure you know what is behind your backstop even if you think it'll stop the bullet.

    3. The 300 blackout round is the best!
