moral conundrum please help

So I have a rifle that is legally mine but was traded to another person . for three firearms . during the sale he was lacking proper paperwork work but he vowed to produce upon pickup of rifle and the shop agreed my side of deal went through without a hitch and I received my three new firearms ten days later . however several days later the FFL called me and told me to come pick up the mosin because the other guy could not produce for mentioned documentation . I still have not heard a word from the other guy about his rifle outside of a single call where he said " sorry buddy I been out of the country to china and Europe but I'm back what's the word on the rifle ." to which I replied it locked up in my safe right now . what would you like to do .. He said quickly I'll call you back .. And I never heard from him again ..

What should I do I don't have any means to contact this person .. Do I just hold it forever ..
Or is it mine again

I think it's yours. If he ever contacts you, let your conscience and the law be your guide.

Give him the minimum amount of cordilality. Make an ultimatum that he needs to handle this or you walk. Can't STAND people that waste other peoples' time like this.

I had a similar situation happen. I sold a firearm, and the buyer could not complete the transaction, and the FFL requested that I take the firearm back, which I did. I called the buyer and offered to return his payment. We agreed on a time and place to meet so I could return his money and he did not show, and never called again.

OP, you are in legal possession of the firearm, keep it for a reasonable amount of time, so that you can conclude the transaction at a time when the buyer wants to finish the transaction. If he fails to finish the transaction, then consider his act as abandoning the transaction.

Sell the rifle and offer to forward the proceeds? Could alleviate the hassle of transferring while still not stiffing the guy even though he was responsible to complete the transaction in the first place.

A middle ground of responsibility (his) vs. consideration (yours), I guess.

I was going to say hold onto it for at least 6mo unless there's a very good reason not to. I would consider asking him for something for your time/gas to re-do the transfer.

Obviously the right thing to do is hang on to it for him, so did he ever say tbe reason it took him so long to get his property ?

This is something i dont quite understand. You made a deal,you finished the deal, but 30 days later the third party that the state requires us to use(ffl) calls and says pick up your gun. Well, its already been traded! It really isnt, or shouldnt be your responsibility at all. You already completed your transaction.

Stupid california! So what was the mosin? And what were the 3 guns in trade?
