Stripped pistol frames and serialized parts

Answer is probably straight forward and unavoidable but I have to ask. What makes a pistol frame identifiable as either this model or that model?

I recently came across a frame I want to purchase for a pistol build. DOJ roster has three variations of this model on list but does not include the other ten variants. Frames and inner workings are identical from one to the other as parts interchangeable from one model to other and are not sold model specific.

Any one know how model is decided? or if serial number stamped by vendor is only distinguishing factor to determine build?

Frame/receiver do not meet what is listed on the Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale.

Handguns that are listed on the Roster also include a barrel length, which needs to match.
Since the frame/receiver does not have a barrel, it does not match and can not be transferred as a "handgun" unless via an exemption (PPT, LEO sale, etc).

    Bottom line...
What's listed on the Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale only applies to complete handguns.

Then why aren't dealers selling frames by the truck load and slides by the truck load the next day?

That appears too easy. Just sell them as "firearm" and that's it?

Current, CA DROS system forces firearms to be classified as "handgun" or "long gun" (rifle/shotgun).

Unless an exemption is used, a frame/receiver will be DROS'd under the "long gun" category, subcategory "rifle", sub-subcategory "receiver".

Making a frame/receiver that was DROS'd as a "long gun, rifle, receiver" into a handgun, will cause it to be considered a SBR (weapon made from a rifle).

Honest question on my end. Figured it would not work the way I hoped but also knew it was better to ask just in case.

Nothing to see here, move along
