Update: Miwalls had Winchester primers for about $25/1K. I wasn't in the market so I didn't look closely. Scheels had a variety of powder in stock but the 8 lb kegs of rifle powder were $200; again, I wasn't in the market so I didnt' look closely.

I think the only time I spent the night in Reno was with my mom as a kid, and since then I've never done more than pass through. What should I expect to pay?

When you go make sure you buy your ticket for the show, and stand in the correct line. Get there early or you will be standing in line for awhile.

For me the show wasn't what I expected, it was a good excuse to get out of town for a mini vacation. Last Reno show I won enough money to pay for gas, room, meals, primers, powder (sportsman's warehouse), and some accessories.

Meh. No powder/primers allowed in the Grand Sierra.

I can buy all the powder I want at Del Mar, right down the 101. What makes driving 500 miles for no powder so great?

For me:
Cow Palace = 2 hours of looking
Reno = 8 hours of looking

Reno is HUGE. Lots of stuff to look at, especially if you like to see lots of different stuff. I've got lots of little projects I'm piecing together and I enjoy the hunt for stuff I need/want.

I think this year, one of the vendor there is having a machine gun shoot @ Spark (15 minutes away from the show).

Prices probably not cheaper. Lots and lots more vendors, like 3 or 4 times as many. Lots of antique firearms, knife makers, antique everything, American Indian stuff, tons of tools and parts. It's impossible to describe really. A couple of years ago I saw a Civil War surgeons amputation kit. Big knives, little scalpels, tourniquets, bone saws, all in a felt lined case. More beautiful old Rugers than you can imagine. And you can stay in the Hotel, get drunk, gamble and eat fine food all night.

I can sure attest to that. Many several years ago I was working for a California construction company and wound up in Reno/Sparks for a few months and it didn't take long to find fine food at a reasonable price. One being Harrah's on every Wednesday night, forget the name of the dining room but what they were known for was a one price all you can eat freshly roasted rare/medium rare prime rib dinner complete with huge slices of Yorkshire pudding, very smooth and creamy horseradish sauce and everything else that didn't matter. This was not your overdone large mundane flavored hump of beef that looked like it was butchered off of a brahma steer, it was real prime rib cuts!
So after finishing dinner and paying the cashier I was always given two free drink tokes which I walked back to the serving line and handed them over to the fellow in charge of the knife and the prime rib. The cutter and I established a routine-me being surrounded by tourists in the serving line, I would watch as he routinely sliced off slightly more than paper thin servings and then it came my turn. He would move the knife down the roast until I nodded and the cut was made, a little more generous than an inch thick-old ladies in the line would gasp. But there's more-along side that fine slab of prime he would also serve up my favorites, small end rib bones that were cut with about three quarters of an inch of prime on both sides.
This was how a few free drink tokes got me preferential treatment every Wednesday and besides, I knew several of the cocktail waitresses in the slots that after a fine dinner again made me on the house, Jim Beam whole.

I went to my first gun show at Cow Palace last week and I would say 50% of the vendor were selling overpriced uppers. Other than Miwall and another ammo vendor which I forgot, there were pretty much nothing else there that were reasonable.

Just left Scheels,,, a ton of reloading components,,bullets galore and a bunch of different primers.
The Reno did not disappoint filled 2 backpacks with essentials. Back in the morning to spend time with a bunch of family that couldn't come till tonight.
