    CCW Permit - Off Roster???

    Aloha,

I am the guy that has to move to CA in the near future. I have several CCW permits for other states, but it seems that CA may be a lot different.

Can I register my Off-Roster handguns that I am bringing to use on my California CCW permit?

I don't know of any IAs that won't allow off roster guns that you moved here with. Some IAs do have caliber/cartridge restrictions though. Some will not allow guns that have been purchased in CA via SSE but, that's not an issue for you.

Sorry. IA=Issuing Agency. In CA, State CCWs are issued by local city and county law enforcement agencies and each one has different policies.

Since I am fairly open to which area in N. CA. that I can move to, do you recommend stopping in or calling the local city / county law enforcement agencies to inquire?

I have looked at the CCW map that is on this site (it is fantastic!), but it doesn't go into further details as to number of handguns allowed on the permit.

I have read that most limit the number allowed to 3 or 5. Is this fairly accurate?

If so, can it be changed later?

              Thank you & ALOHA!

Since you state N.Ca keep in mind that there are many places it is nearly impossible to get a permit. As to where to live if I was relocating here I would want to be as close to my work place as possible, the traffic here sucks big time. An hour long drive on a weekend can and does turn into a 3 hour nightmare commute. Give us an idea where you will be working and I'm sure someone can give you an idea on where to lay down temp roots for your stay.

The closer you get to the bay area, the less likely the IA allows CCW. The further you get, the better your odds.

A distinction: whether or not you get a CCW, you must register guns you bring in when you move here. See also the wiki -- http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Mo..._with_firearms.

As noted, whether an off-Roster handgun may be added to one's CCW is up to the Issuing Agency.

3-5 appears to be the most frequent values noted here; again, that's an IA thing - state law does not limit. An IA might change its policy; a licensee may add and remove particular guns but it's a formal procedure, and again exactly how that is accomplished is highly influenced by the IA.

OP- if you are trying to get near the Bay Area the major counties (Contra Costa, SF, Alameda)are "CCW non grata" as someone mentioned above.
Check out Solano county- I believe they issue. Or you could go to Mendocino, Kern, Sacramento...

Pretty much all counties Sacramento and north are "Shall Issue" counties. "personal protection" is sufficient "good cause" and not being a prohibited person is sufficient "Moral Character."
