Shotgun shooting area

Someone told me that you're allowed to shoot shotgun anywhere you can shoot a rifle, but the fire restriction does not apply to shotguns because they are low fire hazard.

I don't remember exactly what I was told, but it sounded like I can pretty much shoot shotgun in any BLM all year long from what I understood.

Is this true?

If not, where would I need to go to try shooting clay pigeons with my new shotgun?

You'll find a lot more open BLM land for your shotgun then you will for a rifle. From what I have read, BLM doesn't like you shooting Biodegradable clay pigeons because they don't degrade very well in the dry desert.

I'd just go to your local trap and skeet range and shoot there.
