How to shop for firearm pricing?

I've recently jumped into the firearms world and now there is always a firearm that I'm looking to purchase.

My question is how to find the best deal on firearms? I've asked around local shops and seems like the pricing varies greatly depending on the maker. Then using some web sites like GalleryofGuns.com I only get the pricing for three shops, non of which are considered local.

Is there any tips for finding the best pricing? I heard of getting deals on Gunbroker but not sure how much I would be saving after taxes and FFL.

I figure out what I want. Then I go on www.gunsamerica.com and check what prices it is going for. Then I see who will come closest to that deal.

And I buy a lot of used guns.

And since you are in Fremont go to Irvington Arms and ask Martin what he can order for you. That is really your best bet. Plus his prices on most things are already pretty good if he happens to have it in stock.

It really depends on what type of gun you are buying. I believe all my firearms except for one shotgun I've bought online. If you're looking for glocks/sigs, I'd go to www.topglock.com or www.ordnanceoutsellers.com

For shotguns, I'd go to big5. For rifles.......I'm not sure. Other than that, the only thing I can tell you is to shop around and give some online vendors a try if you're looking for cheap deals. If not, support your local gun store.

Go get your copy of the Yellow Pages and look up "Irvington Arms" and call Martin. He's a great guy to deal with, and is in Fremont, too.

ETA: "best deal" on firearms will not necessarily be the best, since you might tick off local dealers by going over their heads, and might charge you an arm and a leg for a transfer. I'd say finding a reputable store that you would like to see remain in business <cough> Irv. Arms</cough> and see what kind of deals they can make you.

SJGE will beat any local in-store price, you can also get a GREAT deal from www.galleryofguns.com (retailers can set their own markup there and SJGE has much better galleryofguns prices on some things than in-store). Also, SJGE will do a gunbroker or internet transfer for $50 + DROS... not the cheapest price, but definitely not expensive either.

Thanks for the comments. I have been to Irvington Arms a few times but was not sure how the prices compare so I wanted to ask first. The owner is a really nice guy, took time to explain my questions and price quotes. They did quote a person in front of me buying a 10/22T stainless for a very cheap price, actually better than I paid for a blued version by $30. I'll stop by tonight and ask about a few possible handguns, my friend is also looking for a 1911 as well.

Ditto on Gallery of Guns. You can find out ahead of time what local retailers are discounting for those guns within Gallery of Guns. Then, you can just have a gun shipped overnight to your local dealer of choice. I've used it many times!
