    Weird question but anyone tried...

A telescope @ the 200+ yard range. I have a cheap little spotting scope and my buddy has a really nice spotting scope. I could actually see better with my cheaper scope than he could, but it was still a bit hard to make out some of the shots with the targets in shadow. Has anybody tried to use any sort of small low powered telescope to really get close to spot shots way out there with small bore and not have to walk 200 yards to see it???

Negatory on the telescope. Tried my buddies mid range quality one and the closest it would clearly see was atleast a mile or two away. YMMV
My cheap spot scope can see 200 yards fine though.

I know several that use telescopes but I don't remember the models that they use. They are cheaper but more delicate than spotting scopes. Be sure to get the eye piece that rectifies the image so that it isn't back wards like most telescopes.

        50BMGBOB,

If I'm thinking of the same people that you're thinking of, I believe most, if not all, of them are using telescopes to veiw targets at 1000 yards. They might not work well at the 200 yard line.

I'm cheap like you. I recently found a toy telescope of mine that appears to magnify somewhere in the 30x range. I was thinking of trying it next time. The image looks horrible, though. Might not be worth my time.

I'll tell you what, today at the range there wasn't a 10k scope that could see @ 100 yards because it was so stinking foggy. This was the first "bad" day at the range I think I've ever had because of the fog and an idiot who almost got killed literally. He decided to walk out and set up a target while the range was hot.

Some relatively cheap telescopes work pretty well as spotting scopes. GGood optics are fairly easy to come by. The real problem is getting one with the right magnification for the range you want to shoot at.

I use my cheap telescope for the LONG shots. But its closest magnification is about 12x going to up 80x. Not exactly easy on small items in near field. it works just fine with 400 yard shots and further.

The best scope I used was and still is Kowa TSN series with 82mm lens that I used for high power shooting match . I could see my 30 cal bullet holes on the target at 300 yards.
