Shooting prone with a AR rifle with a 10/20 mag. I am gauging which to invest in ? Harris bipod, take a backpack off and use that, or bean bags front and or back.? Shots will be out to 500 yards. What do you say , and why.

While I practice shooting off my back pack for hunting and have no issue doing it, you want a bi-pod for medium-long range shooting. Get a bi-pod for the front and bag for the rear. Learn how to load the bi-pod, and learn natural point of aim with good body position. With a bi-pod you can put a little weight into the gun and when your in the right position, you'll be putting out very little muscle effort to hold the gun and it will be right on target.
If your getting jump with an AR, your way out of position.Comment

Personally, a bag.
Theoretically? Donno. I'm sure someone has an answer.
But my bipod is solid, bags are just easier to get set up and ready. Bipod usually takes a min of getting comfortable and ready and aligned properly. Also when shooting various angles and positions the legs take a min to get level and to the desired height, where a bag you can flip, set and go.
Dam with my own post I wonder why I don't use my bags more often lolComment

I prefer a Atlas Bipod over a Harris far more adjustable. Bags work well too just preference I'd guess .Comment

I use bags, too, when possible. A bipod is still good on a hunting rifle.Comment

Bags front and rear. Also expect a POI shift when switching between bags and bipod. The only thing that is worse than an idiot, is someone who argues with one.Comment

I'm actually a terrible prone bipod shooter. With prone, I'm far better with sling or bag(s). Off a bench, I shoot a bipod just fine.

Bags front and rear are ideal for me.
Bag front is next best.
Bipod is last resort.
Bags are more stable and I feel they absorb or at least mitigate recoil better than a bipod does. If I hunted I'd prefer a bag because it would be easier to track/lead your target. Remember, a backpack makes a great front bag and a jacket or butt-bag works as a rear bag.
If you're the high speed-low drag type and on the move, and ease and speed of transition are critical to your mission, then a bipod would be best. But your uber tier1 tactical badassedness would already know that, bro.Comment

In the Army the M249 and M60 machine guns had bipods. The Remington 700 Sniper rifle had a Harris bipod. We were taught to use our rucksacks as a bullet shield and gun rest. I see more bench rest shooters using sand/lead bags than bipods. In fact I can't ever remember seeing a BR shooter use a bipod. I make NO recommendations.
I like a bipod on my AR rifles. It is quick, easy, and reliable. I have never shot out to 500 yards with my rifles. I did shoot that far in the Army.
