    LA area gun cleaning service?

This is going to sound like a lazy S.O.B. with more money than brains, but the real story is just another rifle shooter with an unusual living situation. I'm on a long term project assignment and I'm living in what is called "corporate housing." (think hotel room). My entire life has to fit in a single room for as long as I'm here and that requires some compromises. While I think it would be interesting, I can't even think about loading my own rounds, I buy good quality factory ammo and store the rounds in the CD storage unit. (the rifles stand next to my guitars, I can't overstate how crowded things are...)

When its time to clean my bolt action rifle, the process is so simple and straightforward (remove bolt, run patches through bore, replace bolt, done!), that I can do it at home, even if it means resting parts on the bed and using crazy solvents a few feet from my pillow.

But cleaning my new semi-auto carbine is a LOT more complicated and requires a full breakdown of the rifle to do a serious clean + lube. I've only had the carbine for a month and shot it a handful of times, so I have only done a 'half-assed' type of cleaning that works a few times, but now its time for a full strip / clean + lube. (FWIW, this carbine is noteworthy as being a pain in the ****** to strip down / re-assemble)

I can't image where I'm going to put the fouled parts while I'm taking the damn thing apart. Sitting on the floor and working over some spread out newspaper seems like the best bet. (no, not a single table in the room...) Now that I've wasted 5 minutes explaining the situation, maybe my question will make more sense: Anybody know of any local (LA area) gunsmiths that will provide a full strip / clean / lube service without any other work? Or will they just call me a lazy f#ck and tell me to do it myself?

Any suggestions on who to call?

    Thanks

    Do it in the bathtub

I strip/clean my rifles right on the kitchen island at home, sitting on a towel, its not real hard to do, especially with the FAL.

I use brake cleaner and spray the crap out of everything.

Where abouts are you staying? I bet someone on the board would help you out for some brews or ammo or something.

P.S. A lot of the time I will only clean the bore and not mess with the internals, especially on the FAL and SKS where no carbon gets down in there.

Or find a range which doesn't mind you stripping and cleaning in one of their spare rooms. I've seen a number of folks wander on into the classroom in Iron Sights and do exactly what you're describing. I'm assuming that they are probably under the same kind of constraints you are.

Bain & Davis in San Gabriel. Just go east on the 10 Freeway and it's only within a few minutes from that freeway.

Brake cleaner is the cats *** but you gotta be careful not to get any on the plastic. I once melted the grips on a Benchmade folder trying to clean it with brakeclean. I can only imagine what it would do to a nice FAL or G3 stock.

Yeah, certain brake cleaners either ruin or leave a white residue on plastics, some more than others. I work with cars all day so I know.

Doesn't seem to bother a FAL... Mine takes it with ease

I think I'd look for a buddy in the area that has a nice garage. Sounds like something a few beers and BBQ could solve.

I know the young guy over at sharpshooters in torrance might to it for a fee. He was cleaning the cosmoline off of SKSs for $50. Did a good job too.
