If you know what your looking for you can still get a deal here and there. The last Costa Mesa show we walked away with 7 bricks of 500rds 22 ammo for $200
it was older ammo but it shoots just fine, the rules we use are, know what your looking at and for, set a price and stick to it, beyond that its all entertainment.
Mostly we go for Powder and primers, I don't like HAZMAT fees.
And boy do I miss the Pomona show

This is the only reason that I would attend a gunshow, vendors typically sell powder and primers cheaper than the online cost plus postage and hazmat fees. However, I have enough powder and primers to last me a long time.

Gun show rants are common throughout the US. I've seen it on several sites from many states.

^^^ This. Fairly common topic on the S&W forum. One theory is that a lot of it is just old pharts taking their crap to the show to socialize.
