What to do with Sig Mosquito

I have a Sig Mosquito. Bought it as a fun plink around gun for my mom, and for the kids when they get old enough. The thing has been nothing but an unreliable hunk of crap since day one, but I wasn't too concerned because it is just a fun gun.

Well it now will fire with the safety engaged and I feel like it is an accident waiting to happen. I'm not really interested in sending in a $250 gun for repairs, or selling it and putting a dangerously malfunctioning firearm into the stream of commerce. I had heard about gun buyback programs by the government where they give out gift cards and stuff for people turning in unwanted guns. Is that my best option? Where could I turn it in for at least a little return?

just try gunsmithing and troubleshooting yourself. parts are readily available. and its pretty easy to disassemble and get working again. If its a warranty issue its worth sending in. Otherwise just keep it and turn it into a cigar lighter

Around LA they give out $100 gift cards a couple times a year for turn-ins.

You could try selling it here for maybe $150 with a fair warning that it needs work.
We have some guys here that can fix most anything.

You could ask here for repair suggestions also if you don't mind the effort, but I would use the money for a better .22.

I would sell it. I looked into buying one once, and then I googled "Sig Mosquito" and the negative reviews were overwhelming. Contrast that with a Ruger Mk 1,2, or 3.....better to buy once cry once.

If your only desire is to get rid of it sell after disclosing the issues to the buyer, and get real money instead of a grocery store gift card. Heck I'd give you $100 for it.
But by all means give Sig a call and see if they can fix it under warranty.

The safety is a joke. I fixed mine in place with glue and never gave it a second thought. You dont need a safety on the mosquito-- its a range gun, has no defensive value, and should never be loaded if not in use.

Yes, I would say that the pistol is the worst firearm I've ever owned or fired by a fair margin. I've heard rumors that it is actually made by Umarex (sp?) a popular air gun manufacturer and rebranded by Sig.

It rarely goes through an entire magazine without a malfunction of some kind regardless of which spring I have installed (it came with two nearly identical springs for standard/high velocity ammo).

I thought about this, but I'm definitely no gun smith and if the safety is non-functional I only wonder what else mechanically can go wrong with this design.

I also liked having the safety because when teaching my mom to shoot with it we practiced awareness of it given how common manual safeties are on many DA/SA pistols.

Is it firing on safe or are you just talking about being able to pull the trigger while it's on safe?

Have you tried changing the recoil spring?

I guess I got lucky because mine has been working fine for me. Not saying it's been flawless, but definitely not as bad as some have made them out to be.

It fires on safe. I changed the recoil spring and even tried the recommended CCI ammo, still malfunctions probably 10% of the time.

thats odd. Ive had no issues with mine. It cycles everything and anything that i put through it.

call SIG and tell them whats up.

A co-worker bought one for his kid. He figured it would make a good tool to practice tap/rack/bang and clearing other malfunctions! Sorry to hear of your troubles OP.

Depends on who ya talk to. Mine's been just fine. The trigger is about as horrendous as you will find. The slide is pot metal. It's finicky about ammo & likes being clean. Magazines are pricey & they do NOT like plastic knockoffs.

But mine runs just fine with Golden Bullets, Blazer bulk & MiniMags.
