Not this crap again.
Will birdshot stop a threat? Maybe. If someone is being honest and truthful, that is most honest and accurate answer anyone can give.
Will buckshot stop a threat? Again, Maybe. But the odds of success are greater with buckshot.
Consider this...
What if the bad guy is wearing a leather jacket and motor cycle helmet? Still want birdshot in your gun?
What if you actually need to take a shot through a door or wall? Still want birdshot?
What if the bad guy is on drugs? Still want birdshot?
Are you absolutely sure the fight will remain inside 7 yards? Enough to bet your life on it? What if the fight ends up outside for some reason? What if you have to render aid/defense to a neighbor...maybe he's got a home invasion going on and you need to fire from your yard over to his or something? Still want birdshot?
I don't have a problem with anyone who decides to use birdshot for home defense as long as they're making an informed decision. You're a grown man and it's your life. I'm not about to tell someone how to defend their life.
What I hate and I what I think is absolutely irresponsible, however, is when people recommend birdshot...particularly to newbies...without explaining the limitations of the round. And this video did a pretty poor job of that.
Also consider that no credible instructor ever recommends using birdshot for home defense.
btw...4 inches of penetration (per the video) is not regarded as enough penetration to hit vital organs. Just sayin.
Edit: And gunguy, I'm sorry if any of this comes off harshly. I just noticed you're new here so you likely have no way of knowing what's been discussed to death already. This topic certainly has. I sincerely do welcome you to the forum.

A genuinely stupid / ignorant / uneducated thread...

Interesting video here, kid shot 3 times with birdshot and bashed in the face knocking out his teeth:

However, the important part is that he was involuntarily stopped. Although he didn't succumb to his wounds he would not have been much of a threat to anyone after being hit.
But as many have said before regarding any type of cartridge (shotgun, rifle, or pistol) if it is capable of reliable involuntary stops it is likely to pass through residential interior walls and doors. Any trigger pulled in self defense must take into account what is behind the target.Comment

I don't bother with birdshot, 00 Buck, or Slugs. I use those 12ga heat seeking laser guided flechette grenade shells. Several of the flechettes are made of small wood stakes and others are silver, ya know, just in case the intruder is either a werewolf or vampire.Custom made Tail Gunner Trailer Hitch for sale.
