What to do if you find a gun

I was out hiking in the desert and found a gun last week in a case like new. It was kind of covered with rocks. I set the spot on my GPS and returned a week later it was still there.....Its a nice set up what do you do. Leave it or take it. If I do take it how would I register it. I am confused....

I would take it to the nearest police department

If it's new (never fired ) it would be a nice find ...

someone obviously put it there for a reason and that reason i personally dont want to know about.leave it there and walk away from it.

give the GPS coordinates to the police. It would be sooooo interesting to see if that gun is there in another week

The proper thing to do would be to notify the police agency responsible for that area. Ideally, ask them to come get it so they can photo the setting and relevant location. Since it's out in the dessert waiting for them may take a long time. Giving them directions and GPS coordinates would work too.

Any time you find a "lost" or "abandon" gun, the best thing to do is "secure" the gun in place and keep people away from it while you call 9-1-1. It could be evidence in some serious crime. Or it could be someone accidentally "forgot" it. Preserving evidence on and around the gun is important too (fibers, fingerprints, blood, etc).

Take it to the police. What if some kids find it?

If it were me, I'd play it Finders Keepers. The damage is already done.
But, I've got a private range on private propery.

The PC answer, as stated previously, is to take it to the PD.

The police can track down the registered owner.
