Almost bought a new Classic Smith 586-8 6"

But upon closer inspection, I saw that it had a gap between the frame and crane... all else looked OK.

Apparently its a difficult revolver to come by in Calif. but I passed.

If it had been perfect, I would have bought. Nice looking pistol but...

I got the willies about other possible QC issues after the fact...

So, no impulse purchase today !

You can buy a pre MIM model for less than new. They show up from time to time. Keep yer eyes open & have cash in hand...

If you want a 686, they have all the barrel lengths at Centerfire firearms in riverside. They even had 4 686+ 2.5 inch

Just brought my new one home. Couldn't be happier with the fit and finish. I grab these kind of guns whenever they become available, since they always seem to be rare birds. Plus with S&W's lifetime warranty if anything goes south I know that I will be covered. Additionally I bought mine through Davidson's, so it essentially had 2-lifetime warranties. She's going to the range this morning - can't wait.
