PPT @ Big 5 'must be a firearm we sell'

Waited over an hour and couldn't complete my PPT at Big 5, due to gross incompetence. The untrained "manager" at the local Big 5 couldn't find the manufacturer of 80 year old C&R rifles in the DOJ software, and so she came to a full stop.

"I can't do it because we don't sell this rifle."

Of course an 80 year old firearm didn't come up in the list of manufacturers in Big 5's supply chain.

She also "couldn't" enter in .303 British as a caliber for the firearm "because" Big 5 requires a safe handling demonstration, and they no longer sell .303 british ammunition, nor do they have any snap caps for that cartridge .



I could have actually tried to train her how to do her job on the spot but it might have caused me to have a stroke.

If she was the highest boss on site, maybe write a letter to Corporate and quote a few rules and the need for a teensy bit more training.

Why would anyone even try?
They are a least common denominator, discount chain that sells primarily shoes, camping equipment, a meager assortment of other general stuff, and of course a small selection of normally over-priced firearms. Sales staff expertise is very limited, and generally figured out during smoking and lunch breaks.
With all that said, it is possible to find a few good sales here and there, but don't expect anything more than General incompetency.

Big 5 is known for sales on tennis shoes. I don't go to Rite aid for fishing tackle, or Big 5 for transfers.

I understand if they didn't or couldn't help you, why bash her. Sounds like she was straight about it.

I sold a .22 revolver to a coworker and we did the transfer at the Big 5 in Hayward. Quite painless, but this was in 2002ish.

I think it varies on location, the one I work at 3 out of the 4 managers are very knowledgeable about firearms.

There are some interesting requirements, if one cares to call DOJ and have DOJ call the store.

The basic exception is that if the store does not sell handguns - and IIRC, no CA big 5 location does - then they need not do handgun PPT.

I'd almost expect them to have a policy of only doing PPTs on guns they DO NOT SELL as then there's no possible lost retail opportunity on their part.
Just go to Turners or a LGS.

Attempted to, but ran into the exact same result of the OP. Tried to buy a used Saiga .308 via PPT there, and they flat out said they couldn't do it because they don't sell it. Something about if they don't sell it they don't know if the gun is illegal or not. I pointed out that they were selling those crappy IO Casar AK's and it is practically the same gun (that was back when they were selling them) and that just seemed to puzzle the guy so he told me I'd have to speak to the manager but he wasn't there. Was ridiculous. They lost some unrelated sales because of that BS over the years since then.
