    Help me choose

I'm settled in on a new "ranch gun", something to use and abuse. I'm leaning towards two opposite directions: a Glock 19, or a Mossberg 500 field 12ga.

    Talk me into/out of either?

Both are good choices for a knock about firearm. You can bat and bounce them around and they will function fine.

Are you sure you want a shotgun for a ranch gun? Not much range.

I agree they are good choices for " ranch" guns but we need to know how much how big is the ranch?
do you have large livestock on it & do you have predators bothering any livestock ?..etc.

firstly if I owned a ranch, with livestock and some acreage I would be carrying a Glock 26 or Glock 19 with me almost all my waking hours.

because if you have that type of ranch you will usually miles and miles away from any neighbors or help...so it's very true to state you are on your own.

that said the versatility (due to the many types of ammunition for 12 gauge that's available.) and reliability of a Mossberg or any well designed pump shotgun cannot be disputed.

The rancher we leased from for years used a Mini-14 with a 1.5-5X scope set at 2X in his jeep or ATV most of the time, along with a .357 revolver. He had 25K acres of both barley and hill country. On horseback, he used the same in a scabbard, though sometimes he used a Marlin .30-30.

The glock would be good for personal protection around the ranch. You have to have a Ruger mini-14 ranch rifle, come on! Just kidding but I do like the mini-14 just not always the straightest shooter. My ideal throw around ranch gun would be a 30-30 lever with just the fixed sights. Throw it in and out of the truck use and abuse it. If you ever have to deal with down livestock a .22 mag rifle does the job. Lots of choices.

If it were me, I'd have a pistol on my person at all times, and an AR in the truck. But thats just me. If your limited to just one gun for now, get the Glock.
