For those still following this thread...I have now shot at both targets I bought, one with Federal .223 and the other with XM193, about 15-20 shots each at 55 yards. The .223 seems to do slightly more damage than the XM193, but both have pitting. After they saw photos I sent them, they advised me not to shoot the .223 at it anymore. I'm not really satisfied with that as it's a pretty common ammo sold in stores. Seems strange to me since it's not steel-tipped, and they didn't advise against it until now.

But none-the-less, they are being communicative about the issue and are going to send me two new targets, and I'm really hoping there is no pitting at all. I've seen youtube videos, shooting with XM193 at 30 yards with absolutely no damage, so I would expect to have those same results, especially at 50+ yards.

I'm hoping it was just a bad batch of steel and that I will be able to shoot at them at 50 yards with no issues.

Well, I'm a little disappointed...they sent out 2 replacement targets. I tested one of them at 55-60 60-65 yards and it pitted similar to the previous ones. I shot at it with XM193. I will email them later today with the results.

Most vendors say to use rifle rounds at 100+ yards don't they?

Correct, most do say that. However, these are angled downwards, specifically for shooting at 50 yards and less (with disclaimer regarding safety) . I've been in communication with them about it and they don't know why they are pitting. They thought I might be using steel-tipped ammo, but all I've been using is XM193 and Federal .223. I haven't shot closer than

Most vendors have weak plates then. I think its more about safety than strength though as I am sure there have been more than a few people that forgot to angle it.

I shoot my MGM target with my AR from about 15-25y no problem.

OP, I would request you get your money back as it doesn't sound like you are getting real AR500.

I'm probably going to go that route, being these are replacements and at least one is experiencing the same problems. I'm not convinced having them replaced again would help. I'll have to take a closer look at the MGM's you referenced above in your posts. With these shootsteel targets, the 2x4 mounting bracket automatically adjusts them downwards so there is no error in creating the angle unless the stand is placed on a sloped terrain. What is strange is that they say they test a target from each batch to make sure they are good. They use standard loads as well as hotter loads, and they didn't have any issues.

Here I am shooting my brothers's MGM a few years ago. I bought the same one last November.

A couple of my friends have plenty of steel from ar500-targets.com and they are holding up well. Just getting dings on the edge. He has even shot 7.62x54r steel core at one with a Mosin from 100y.

Nice. And no pitting? That's even better. It appears this setup is more expensive than the package I got (which was sale discounted), but sounds like it will meet my needs more. Thanks man!

Yeah no pitting what so ever on either target. It costs a lot of money compared to simple gongs but I think its more versatile.

And mag dumps on steel are hard to beat.

I agree. I have the shootsteel.com pistol targets that are similar to your setup, and I love them. It's great having the audible feedback when traditional paper targets would be too far away to see the results without getting closer to the target. In your video where you are shooting at it with your rifle, are there audible sounds? I thought I heard one, "ringing" sound but can't tell for sure if it's muffled by the gunfire.

It's a little harder to distinguish the ringing when shooting with a rifle up close.

After some further correspondence with them, they asked me to ship them back one of the targets so they can test it. I'll get it in the mail tomorrow and will update here when I get their response.

So over the weekend I shot my MGM target from 50-60y with some Wolf AK ammo. No problemo.
