For those still following this thread...I have now shot at both targets I bought, one with Federal .223 and the other with XM193, about 15-20 shots each at 55 yards. The .223 seems to do slightly more damage than the XM193, but both have pitting. After they saw photos I sent them, they advised me not to shoot the .223 at it anymore. I'm not really satisfied with that as it's a pretty common ammo sold in stores. Seems strange to me since it's not steel-tipped, and they didn't advise against it until now.
But none-the-less, they are being communicative about the issue and are going to send me two new targets, and I'm really hoping there is no pitting at all. I've seen youtube videos, shooting with XM193 at 30 yards with absolutely no damage, so I would expect to have those same results, especially at 50+ yards.
I'm hoping it was just a bad batch of steel and that I will be able to shoot at them at 50 yards with no issues.
