I have never shot high powered rifles so a friend convinced me to go to Angeles and try out his Winchester 30-30 levergun and his bolt action Remington 788 in .308.
I brought along my M&P 15-22 so I could blast a few different types of .22 through it and see how well I would do at 100 yards.
Got there about 11:00, 89 degrees but dry so OK since we were shooting under the shade.
M&P 15-22:
Once I got my older eyes adjusted and settled down, I hit 9 out of 10 on the gong once, but mostly around 40 - 50%.
Shot about 350 rounds of Colt by Aguila, CCI mini-mag, CCI Tactical AR, and Geco (new .22 LR round to me, from Germany).
Flawless, no issues with all rounds.
Geco was oily, so I may have extra gun cleaning tomorrow.
Remington 788:
Some nice kick but since he had a nice scope on it, 3 out of 3 on the gong.
Being a lefty, it took some adjustment to deal with a right-handed bolt.
The scope made me realize how steady I needed to be to take the shot.
Paper: low and to the right, so-so groupings.
Winchester 1894(?) 30-30:
Leverguns are just fun.
The iron sights were easy to use.
Hit 2 out of 3 on the gong, flinched on shot 3.
Did OK on paper with sandbags, so-so standing.
Range Office:
Check-in was easy, staff very friendly.
We got lucky since Thursdays were 50% off so gas got paid for.
Range Officers:
Very courteous and affable.
Told them I was a noob and they made sure I knew some of the unwritten rules before I messed up.
Range:
Variety of distances up to 600 yds.
We went to the 100 yd. this first time so I could learn the big guns.
Positives:
Most everything.
Gongs were a treat along with shooting outdoors, can't do that too often without hating on the LA traffic.
Did not break any of the rented PVC target holders, I was surprised.
Negatives:
1) Leftys just can't shoot with the cartridge blocking screen in place and also keep the muzzle past the edge of the concrete table as required.
( It must be a racism thing.
)
2) Concrete tables not good if you like to protect the guns, but we brought pads.
This thread is worthless without pic.....:
Recommendation:
Bring a cooler with ice, water and/or non-adult beverages of your choice.
Recommendations to self:
Get a scope on the 15-22, maybe a tripod as well.
Get a .223 AR or a .357 levergun. (Or the CG answer, get both!)
Get a spotting scope. (Can't see Shoot N' C holes at 100 yds.)
Conclusion:
Great day out!
Have to go to pistol section next time and make a full day out of it to avoid rush hour.
