Any Texas people? Got NFA question.

So I'll be moving to Texas just outside Austin soon and wondering how long do I need to wait until I can purchase NFA items. Or is it ad soon as I am considered a resident?

You can purchase right away. Heck, you don't even need to be a resident of said state to have NFA items (multiple trustees).

Just make sure your trust is squared away by a lawyer and not some internet-fill-in-the-blank-form.

I'm no expert but I think you you need to be a resident of the state to purchase firearms. I know that is not your question. But once you have your driver license and you car registered in Texas, I don't think you would have any problems. But let me put in a disclaimer, I'm just guessing.

You can purchase the items as soon as the above is done. But you won't be able to take possession of them until you get your Form 4 back from BATFE. That is running about a minimum of 4-6 months from what I'm told.

You have to be a resident of the state you are purchasing (taking possession of) a firearm in. However, I THINK (this is unverified by me because, I haven't had the need to do the research) that if one has a trust, the trust is legally purchasing the firearm. So, a CA resident could have a NFA trust in AZ, another in TX and a third in CA and each trust could legally purchase and own firearms in their respective states.

Well I just called a shop out in Texas and all I need to be is a resident, pay for the tax stamp, and wait for the approval to go pick it up. So I'm pretty happy. A buddy of mine just told me that he got his supressor in 2 month so that's pretty quick.

If you already know your TX address you can buy now if you will be buying from outside TX. It takes 45-60 days to transfer from an outside FFL to a TX FFL on a form 3 and if it is not in the FFLs hands it takes another 45-60 days to get from the distributor or manufacturer. I could sell you suppressors and sbr's right now and by the time you are settled in they would be showing up at your FFL in TX.

Items get placed into a trust. A person has to pay. A person has to fill out the 4473 to take possession of the NFA items. All proper ID is required. ATF requires dealers here to run a NICS on the person picking up the NFA item even though he is exempted in line 22.

A CA resident with an AZ trust can buy all he wants from me but he won't be taking possession of anything. He has to have an AZ ID or other proof of AZ residency if he wants to actually take his toys home. I have a lot of Ca residents that want NFA items stored with me but the only way it can be done is if I am on the trust. I have locals that have me on trusts because I can then store their toys when they are on vacation or back in the summer state. So far no CA resident has been gone this route simply because they don't visit AZ enough.
