We have a lot of debate on this forum about whether it is lawful to later convert your single-shot 80% to semi-auto. I believe that it is not legal, and that Penal Code section 32000 is the reason why. You're manufacturing a "unsafe handgun" as that term is used in the code. There is no exemption in the code for personal manufacturers.

A lot of folks try to separate the semantics of "manufacturing" and "converting", but there's no support in the case law for that approach. It's really a wide open question just waiting for a defendant to serve as the "test case."
You do not need to register an 80% firearm, you may want to have it laser engraved with a S/N and you can always do a vol reg.

When you build the firearm from an 80% you must follow certain steps to comply with the law.
    1. After you have completed the drilling/milling of fcg and installed lpk you must install a bullet button so any magazine becomes fixed.
    2. After step 1 install a zero round sled.
    3. Install upper
    4. Once you have completed the above steps you may remove the 0 round sled.
If you attach the upper without a fixed zero round sled you have manufactured what CA considers an unsafe weapon which is against the law.

Is there a minuim length or maxinium length?
Bullet button and less than 10 rounds?
      I have a 7.5" 5.56 that is extremely accurate on a 12" steel plate at 100 yrds.

Anybody have a source for a zero round sled? I think Franklin Armory has one but haven't found any other vendors.

I went with a much cheaper vice block that goes into the magwell for working on a lower. They're on amazon. Same concept, but they don't lock the action back as they aren't intended for firing. However, the action will reciprocate (so it would be a self-extracting, straight-pull, single-shot bolt action).

                $15.90

The Bob sled is way nicer though.

Is there any official way to document that the AR pistol was assembled as a single shot, and then converted later on? Is the only way to register it?

receipts with sled, maybe build upper so you can order gas tube separate to show with a pic of it single shot....

^ Google only returned the Franklin Armory one (which I like and is cheaper) and the Original Bob Sled one for way more.

How much more for the average shooter? It could be negligible. I've added a picture with a test of pressure on different barrel lengths and gas systems. As you can see the shorter versions run much higher pressures than their longer counterparts.
I went the piston route because I wanted a 7.5 barrel and heard about the additional wear on the gas port due to the shorter barrel. Runs smooth and clean after the same amount of rounds.

So I'm looking to build a 9mm AR pistol with a 7.5 inch barreled upper and customer service from the vendor said it employed blowback method vs. gas tube. Anything I should be concerned about?

Yes, How do you plan to satisfy the "Break-Top" or "Bolt Action" design requirement?

Well pistons don't use a gas tube. The only difference I see is that the gas is pushed in front vs the action. Plus less filth.
