    Checking Serial #'s

In all seriousness should a person come a cross a firearm and want to check on standing of this firearm how do you do this if only the serial # is available in other words you can't take the firearm with you. This in todays society and regulations.

From what I understand is that the local police department can check that information for you. If it comes up ok then there shouldn't be a problem. If it comes up as stolen or other then Im sure they will want to have information from you.

Please keep in mind, if a serial number on an item of personal property is run through the system and it comes back as stolen, the officer is obligated to seize the item. There is a permanent record of the date and time and the identification of the officer that ran the check. Are you sure you want to put a “friend” in that position?

It just is not appropriate for a LEO not investigating a particular crime to 'run a serial number', and it is probably not within department rules to share LEO info with non-LEO.

That is, there is no legal, accessible way for a person to 'run a serial number', and asking LEO to do it is likely to Create A Problem for him/her if he/she wants to do you a favor.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

The serial is checked when you DROS the firearm.

Your leo "friends" won't do it. And they will tell why. It has to do with it's not their investigation and not their business. When you DROS the firearm, the serial is checked then and if you're actually picking up the firearm then it's all cleared. Unless the seller is stupid and knowing it's not his gun and actually goes through the sale you have nothing to worry about.
