Well, if you were starting from scratch I'd say go full size, but since it's what you already have and already know how to shoot it, I'd say it's probably fine.

I have my XD subcompact for CCW and nightstand duty (I'm putting a G17 in jail for my HD this week). I like the XD over my shield or other full size guns is one reason. It has a rail for a light.
