    RUGER SP101 Trigger Job?

My experience is this: Shot 75 rds out of it straight from the box, (25) of which .357. It was getting a little gritty and cylinder wasn't a nice free spin to say the least. Was thinking yes I need to polish everything up when I get home.

Instead I just cleaned it with only taking the rubber hand grip off and dropping some oil on spring, down in hammer area and trigger. 500+ squeezes later and she feels sooo good. NP with a 3/4 pull locking the cylinder waiting to shoot. Mine is DAO 2.25"

The internet says Ruger says, yes pull the trigger 1,000 times, won't hurt it and it will break in nice. I use snap caps.

No I won't be doing a spring change out, love it, sweet smooth action.

    Did you? Will you? Why?

I like my SP. I've got about 30 rounds thru mine combination of 38 and 357. Double action is a bit painful. Single action is more accurate and fun. Not sure if Id want to put any more money in it. Its more of a nightstand gun.

I think Ruger listens to it's customers. Maybe they are just smoother actions today? Graffiti is hardly noticeable and would be much easier to remove should one find it necessary. I also don't find a lot of sharp edges people complain about other than the trigger guard, it will get some polish on the edges.

I have a SP101 in 22lr. The factory main spring was rated for 16lbs.
That is the spring rating, not trigger pull. I put in a 12lb spring and is much better in DA. I think it cost ~$5.00. Also did some polishing while I had it apart. Much better in both SA and DA. No problems with the gun going BANG using the lighter spring.

I installed the Wolfe spring kit; hammer and trigger return springs.

Trigger return spring: too soft! While it did ease the pull, I now had mushy and slow trigger return speed.
For a target only gun, this is OK.
For a self defense gun, you want a fast and powerful trigger return to reduce the chances of short-stroking the trigger for the second shot.
I removed the Wolfe spring and put the original back in.

Hammer spring: again, softer and made it easier to pull the trigger, but the hammer drop was noticeably softer and slowed.
While I did not have any misfires, this did not inspire confidence.
I put the original hammer spring back in, but I did cut about 3 coils off the length to reduce the preload a bit.
This gave me a little lighter trigger pull, easier manual cocking, and still have good hammer speed for fast and reliable ignition.

While I had everything apart (several times), I did de-burr and lightly polish the action parts where needed.

I broke mine in with several range trips. Now she is a smooth shooter.
It doesn't matter how scary, ugly, uncomfortable, or inconvenient self defense can be. Like it or not, you will never, ever be relieved of your duty and responsibility to defend your life, your family, your country and your freedom.

How much ammo do I need? Enough to last me the rest of my life, and then lot more for later.
