    "Owning a gun"

I found this to be a very enjoyable article:
As one might expect of a man so brilliant, Thomas Jefferson had the perfect answer to modern politicians itchy to disarm the ordinary citizen. "Laws that forbid the carrying of arms … disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. … Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better […]

As one might expect of a man so brilliant, Thomas Jefferson had the perfect answer to modern politicians itchy to disarm the ordinary citizen.

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms ... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. ... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."

This is an entry in his Commonplace Book, dated sometime between 1774 and 1776.

That is good stuff, and anyone who owns a gun has already come to that realization.

Yes he did, but what does that have to do with the subject?

somebody cited jefferson's affection for guns. jefferson was not perfect and just because he thought guns were neat doesn't mean anything more than one man's personal opinion.

Just because it's one man's opinion doesn't devalue its worth, especially if it is insightful and many others come to share the same opinion. Ideas can be powerful and some men naturally wield them more skillfully than others.

No less. 3 shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be 3. 4 shalt thou not count, nor either count thou 2, excepting that thou then proceed to 3. 5 is right out. Once the number 3, being the third number, be reached, then, lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.'

That seems to be the gun grabbers (and lib's in general) mentality. "The Second Amendment and whatever-else-I-dont-like-about-the-Constitution was drafted by wealthy white slaveowners who had no idea of what things would be like in 200 years." Yet these same people are so quick to hide behind the 1st Amendment so that they may wipe their *** with the Stars and Stripes, and call it "free speech".

Jefferson and the other Founding Fathers had foresight. They werent as myopic as some of us like to think.

I suspect that ones perspective on freedom is different when one actually has to earn it.

Funny, I didn't read it as "his affection for guns", or that "he thought guns were neat", but he saw the need to be armed and understood that laws alone will not keep people safe from those who would seek to do harm to those of weaker statue, but that's just my opinion.
Do you not agree with his( Jeffersons) statement, and why not?
