Ammo storage (factory box vs. MTM plastic box)

I just purchased several of the MTM 50 round ammo storage boxes. My question is whether I am better off keeping ammo in the original factory cardboard boxes or moving them to the new plastic boxes. Either way I will be storing the boxes inside a 50 cal MTM ammo can.

This ammo will be stored for several months inside of the ammo can. The primary reason I am thinking about removing ammo from factory boxes is because of damage to the cardboard.

The ammo can will be stored in rear of vehicle with a lot of movement.

    Thanks in advance for opinions.

The only reason I see to keep the original box is the lot number in case of a manufacturer recall, or an issue you may have where the manufacturer asks for a lot number. In your case, maybe tear off the end tab with the lot number on it and put it in the plastic box.

IF you move your ammo to plastic boxes I would suggest keeping the lot number with your ammo in case of a recall.

Do you have a bunch of the same ammo? since they are not reloads skip the box and just dump them in the can or ziplock? I've never heard of loose ammo setting off on its own. Otherwise there would be exploding supply drops all over the middle east.

Cardboard attracts moisture but since it is in an ammo can it should be ok.

If u are going to use it, u should put it in ziplock and cut the box with info and put it in there.

If u plan to sell them, keep it in the original box.

Move them to the plastic boxes. The Plano or MTM boxes usually hold 100 rounds and are usually take less space.

Not good. Prolonged vibration can abrade gun powder, I am told. You don't want to do this for years on end.

I leave mine in the OG box In ammo cans with silica, I only use the plastic boxes for reloads.
.22 I empty the boxes into those money bags with zipper.

Depends on what it is and what it's for.

Hand loads go in boxes labeled.

Handgun or plinking factory or reloads just got in a can.

Factory ammo usually site in its OEM box cause, well it doesn't last long before I go use it.

Thanks for the opinions. I think I might put them in the plastic box and put a tab from the factory box inside.

It wouldn't be an everyday occurence.

Just leave your factory ammo in the boxes they came in. Use the plastic boxes for handloads.

OP said he's only storing ammo for a few months. If so, keep them in the original box and if possible, put box inside ammo can. I don't think factory ammo will degrade if kept in original packaging (only after a few months).

My factory ammo stays in original box and goes into ammo cans. I use the MTM plastic cases for hand loads. YMMV.
