I'm not having a glass of wine, I'm having SIX. It's called a tasting and it's classy.

I actually don't mind. It was a minor inconvenience to take their range safety test. I often feel safer at San Leandro than GFOS and I almost shudder to say - gang banger wannabe land Targetmasters. It is probably more because the latter two places have rentals and Davis street does not.

But I don't know why, San Leandro Davis street just feels safer than the other ranges, in terms of not getting swept or shot by people with complete disregard to cardinal gun rules.

Thanks for the heads up skosh69 not everybody knows the deal at Davis. I usually make the 25 minute drive to Chabot over the 15 minute drive to San Leandro because members shoot for $7.75 at Chabot and I prefer outdoor pistol. That said, grabbing an In and Out Burger on the way to the Saturday Night Steel Shoot is even better than shooting at Chabot.

I get why they want the card, but they're not completely truthful about the time it's administered....I've called twice to take the test on the weekends, and both days they couldn't confirm that they'd be administering it, due to lack of staff.

They don't really "administer" the test. They just give you the study guide and the "test" and you go into the room and take it. It's open book and you take as much time as you want. Once finished, you tell the guy and he comes back and checks against the answer sheet. If you get any wrong, which you really shouldn't on an open book test, he'll point them out to you and you get a chance to learn it correctly.

It's really a great way to motivate people to learn some basic (like don't shoot yourself or someone else, basic) firearms safety. And don't forget ladies night Wednesdays when women shoot for free!

The only things that might trip you up are the range-specific questions, like no one under 12. I understand $25 vs. $15 sounds steep, but it's their way of providing motivation to read and understand their range safety rules.

The steel shoot is a lot of fun but will burn ammo quickly. The last time I went was before the steel shoot cards.

The steel shoot is actually run independently from the regular range. They use the facilities but have some different safety rules than the regular range. You need to go through an orientation, given on the first and/or second Saturday of the month, to get a signed safety card. It's $18 to participate in the steel shoot.

Round count? Does this vary, could a shooter use a little less ammo., I do not hand load yet?

                      Thanks

Shoot as much or as little as you like, but you should have an absolute minimum of 200-300 rounds on hand.

I wouldn't say there's an absolute minimum. Estimate 2 mags (20 rounds) each time you go up to the line. Then decide how many strings you want to shoot and that's your round count. On a slow night (not that many people) you can do 200 rounds per hour, times three hours. Or hang out, sit out a few strings and chat with people.
