AR500 Gongs

Question for folks who own and use AR500 gongs. Where are you using these? Will any of the local ranges let you use them? I know Angeles and Oak Tree have area set up for pistols but what about for rilfes? Will either Burro Canyon or Lytle Creek allow them and if so typically at what distance?

Just want to know before I shell out money on some.

Yes for Angeles. 100 yards minimum for centerfire rifle. I have set smaller targets for rimfire between at 35-100 yards.

No steel whatsoever at Burro.

Lytle Creek might already have some steel up there, but I haven't been in a while.

If you rent a private range, you can use them... same with public land....

Fire danger is a real concern so clear brush and have a shovel & Extinguisher on hand


If you set one out at a public range, many others will use/ abuse it

Haven't been to Lytle Creek but at WEGC main range. U can use them at 50yds to 100yds.

I heard u can use them at Raahauges but i don't know the specifics. The RO has to approve them first.

Are you talking Burro Canyon? They have the "private" ranges.

I have a few. We use them at WEGC for the C&R shoots, or out on our property in the desert. I don't take them anywhere else.

USI, multi purpose range

For members, hang steel targets from 25 to 200 yds.

it's tough to see in the pic, there's a 4" gong at 50 yds and a 10" gong at 200 yds. I normally also have a 6 "er at 100 or 200.
At the closest distance, i/we shoot pistolas only

I use a 10" gong at Desert Marksman in Acton (private range)

I use one on my property. A 1/2" thick 8 incher at 100-200 yards. Hung with a 20* angle down. Don't hang from smallish wood or the splatter will eat through the vertical supports.

Burro and Lytle Creek are both on National Forest land, and Lytle seems to be the less restrictive of the two. Though, you might give them both a call and see what they currently allow.

West End is the place to be if you want to shoot your own steel. BLM is also a good choice. Setting anything out at a public range risks having your target and stand damaged.

So I picked up some AR500 gongs they have over in the deals thread. Anyway, hoping to use them at the SSZS and I called Lytle and was told yes > 100 yrds.

1. Make sure whatever size gong you have that the stand will stay upright upon impact. Swing it back and forth somewhat violently to see the effects before you get to the range. Nothing ruins a shooting session more than a flimsy stand. I've been battling this for a while. It's hard to find a balance between portability, durability, stability, and price.

2. Bullet velocity is what kills a target. 100 yards for 223/5.56 will leave some minor pitting. Bi-metal and steel core will also kill it faster.

3. You either buy strong hardware less frequently that costs a small percentage more which has a very long life, or you buy cheap hardware that you will likely be replacing every range session. Use grade 8 bolts and washers, and grade 70 chain (if you use chain).
