    Accident at Angeles today.

    Folks,

Was at Angeles today around 1545pm, and a fella next to me was shooting a Sako hunting type rifle. It was in .300 Winchester Magnum, I heard a low thump, and saw the floor plate drop to the ground.
The rifle jumped a little bit from his shoulder. He was a bit in shock, on his right cheek and mandible were sprayed with shrapnel, and droplets of blood formed. I set my rifle down, and went over to check up on him.
He seemed ok, stunned. His friend with him came over. I could not find the shell, not sure of what happened? The ammo was Federal off the shelf, no reloads. Glad he is ok, A2

Scary stuff. Guy at a range I used to go to had a "kaboom" with a brand new HK and factory ammo. Thankfully, when considering the amount of rounds expended, these events are statistically nil.
Though perhaps not to the few on the receiving end.
Just gotta carry on and if you reload, relaod carefully.

I've always wondered about this. Anyone have a source?

We have all seen the videos of guys using a bore sighting tool and blowing up the rifle with a plugged bore...

KB's happen... keep the protective glasses on....

Do you have any pictures by any chance? (cleaning rod hanging out the bore?)

                Well
14 million hunters in the US
so that is a few rounds going downrange and the media does not cover blow up guns...

Ammo sales are not published... but retail in the US is about 4 billion in sales in 2012....

So with bullets costing well under a buck, that's a lot of rounds and very few KB's....

                  Glad he's okay.

That could have had a nasty outcome.

damn, that is a great way to walk away from an issue when dealing with a .300 win round. Hope he heals up quick.

Factory ammo? Now that really sucks. At least with reloads, you can't blame anyone but yourself. I expect Federal will hear about this. Glad he is ok.

Glad to hear he's okay. I am really curious if this is related to the factory ammo vs firearm malfunction or human error?

Usually it's one of the latter two: excessive headspace or other condition causing case separation; or bore obstruction.

Back when I was in the gun business, Sakos were/are considered very high quality firearms, but I did see a few cases of Sako rifles launching their claw extractors off the rifle…
Glad to hear the shooter was mostly unhurt.

When was this? I ask because I remember there were some pretty hot factory .40 S&W going around years ago.
