    Baby carrying while carrying

Interested in how any other new dad's out there carry with their kiddo. My wife and I have a 10 month old we take throughout the city, hikes, beach, etc. Quick trips/shops I usually carry him in my arms but on the longer ones we use an Ergo Performance. Nice option that keeps my hands free (at home too when doing chores, cleaning the guns, etc), very comfortable, and usually puts my son to sleep within a few minutes. Waist strap rides right above my gun and spare mag without printing too bad, allows quick access only AIWB though due to the strap design and how my son rides on my back. You can also wear the carrier up front and carry IWB.

I don't think you're thinking this through all the way. In the event that you actually ever do have to use your gun, you don't want your baby anywhere near you...least of all strapped to your back. Best to let your wife take the child. And her job is to get as far away from the scene as she can, as fast as she can. She doesn't come to you or your body (should the worst happen).

I realize that it may not always be practical for your wife to have the child. Accordingly, you should work out a plan. At the first sign of trouble you wife grabs the kid out of the carry and runs. Or whatever makes sense. And she should probably try to grab the kid BEFORE you draw. As soon as you do draw and it's seen, expect rounds coming in.

I respectfully understand what you've put forth. I have thought it through, and in the event that would force me to draw, there wouldn't be time for what you suggested. If so, I would be running away with them. Bank, store, restaurant, or etc..bad guy is in my proximity and draws on me or close to it and it's draw-point-shoot from there. If he's halfway across the store or not in our line of sight, then I'm hightailing it out of there with my wife and kid doing my best to protect them in the process.

The better question is how are you carrying at all since you reside in Santa Clara County? Are you LE or did you just start a thread advertising your illegal CCW?

Now, not that I have any problem at all with you doing so, I just wouldn't advertise it on the internet.

I've always liked this silly idea -

But more seriously, I think a baby carrier is about as reasonable as a sling for one's long gun or a holster for a handgun - you don't want to drop or leave behind any of baby or gun.

are you going to run backwards to evade the threat or are you going to turn around exposing your child to the threat? What if you need to back into a corner and its a shallow corner and the child carrier prevents you from backing all the way into the corner and you aren't able to have good cover because of the child carrying method.

As you stated short trips to the market ideally a child is best protected in your arms but in the case that you are using the carrier how do you shield your child from any potential threat? If the child is always in your arms you are in control of 99% of the ways to shield them and present your firearm and engage the threat. Maybe with a child on your back you may unknowingly expose the child by looking around corners or not directly facing the threat. Tough call. Just like anything if you're practicing scenarios and find the best way to evade without threat to the child since that is the priority then I guess it would be best case scenarios

Kid on my left hip using left arm to hold/support, and firearm IWB at 4 o'clock leaving right hand free to defend. If I am wearing baby carrier usually baby hawk, same carry spot only wear baby as high as possible to keep them out of the way in case I have to draw firearm. Yes isn't the best setup but with 2 kids wife usually in charge of one while I am in charge of the other.

Good feedback guys and all valid points.

I recently watched a self defense video on ASP (Active Self Protection - actual footage that is slowed down and discussed) where a dad had his kid on right arm while shopping. Sensed something was wrong with another customer and started walking out of the store - pretty smoothly had to swap his kid to the left arm while drawing his pistol with the right hand while turning to face the threat (a small window of the kid being between dad and the bad guy so dad could line up his strong side). It all happened very fast with little time to decide which way was the "best way" vs instinct and training.

I love the assumption that your wife is always there when your kid is too....how quaint.
As a modern father I take my kid with me places WITHOUT a woman to "rescue" me from the awful scourge of dirty diapers or (gasp!) a temper tantrum.
As a result of being an attentive father AND having a CCW I understand the OPs question perfectly. The period of time when you actually have to carry your kid bodily on you all the time is relatively short and there is no sure way to shield them from harm except to flee at the first sign of danger.
Whereas, if you are by yourself, you might engage a mass shooter in a mall.....when your kid is with you, you are better off just tucking tail and GTFO of there. Your kid is the most important thing.....keep your body between the shooter and your kid whether he is on your front or backside.
Don't bother drawing your gun unless absolutely necessary.

I'm sure you agree that every scenario needs to be practiced and engrained to set yourself up for success. Hopefully you'll never have to use the techniques but your diligence in practice in and of itself is a great defense. Best of luck

Both posts sum up my thoughts exactly. And even if "practice" means mental practice/running scenarios (not sure if showing up to the range with a baby doll would fly lol) and talking it through with your significant other, at least there is that mindset if SHTF with one's kid/family nearby.

Close! We'll be getting a Tula shortly. My son is almost about to outgrow the Ergo which is perfect timing with our daughter due in August.

IDK, That IWB carry at 1 0'clock looks like the gun is pointing right at your junk.
                              Might mean no more kids.....................
