Ursula von der Leyen said last month that a study showed the G36 rifle has a "precision problem, particularly at high temperatures." Manufacturer Heckler & Koch has questioned those conclusions, complained about a lack of consultation and accused the government of damaging its reputation.

It took them 20 years to determine there is a precision problem at high temperatures? Didn't anyone, umm, shoot the thing?

In April 2012, reports surfaced that G36 rifles used in Afghanistan would overheat during prolonged firefights after several hundred rounds were fired. Overheating affected the accuracy of the G36, making it difficult to hit targets past 100 meters, ineffective past 200 meters, and incapable of effective fire past 300 meters. The G36 has been called unsuitable for long battles. HK said the rifle was not designed for sustained, continuous fire. German soldiers gave no negative feedback. Operational commanders advised allowing the weapon to cool between periods of rapid shooting.[13][14][15] In February 2014, the Federal Ministry of Defence announced that the overheating deficiencies of the G36 was not a result of weapon design, but of the ammunition. Oh, it's not so much a precision problem as it is a materials problem.

As in, according to what I've been reading, HK was using polyethylene vice the specified polyamide.

In other words, they were using (essentially) ground up milk jugs instead of high quality nylon.

If that's actually true ... then there's some VERY serious liability exposure on HK's part for fraud.

Maybe it will stop my buddy from buying the 36 with his over whelming need to build/buy everything I own and try to match or one up me.


First it was my bow, my exact AR setups,then my gun collection, then my laptop now he's trying to top of match my LR308 build with a 36 or his own LR308.

There are some political shenanigans at play.
HK offered to retrofit and fix all rifles at no cost but the Government has not responded to their offer.

A battle rifle not designed for sustained continuous fire? What did they expect all engagements to be over with a few rounds?

Remember this thing was designed right at the end of the cold war. They may have just been expecting nukes to get dropped and the issues with melting to get blown away...

where is that? I couldn't find it on google....would be interested in reading about it.

Could the offer be turned down also because the soldiers had lost faith in the rifle? Remember the AR-15/M-16 had an issue in loss of confidence that it took almost 30 years to get away from.

I have only one HK (Benelli/HK M3) and my experience with HK's warranty was amazing.
