    Looking to get first rifle

I'm looking to get my first rifle. I was thinking some sort of .22 with a scope. Not sure if I should go semi-auto or manual. I'm in Southern California and would use it at Burro Canyon Range mainly for target practice. What would your thoughts for a recommendation?

Ruger 10-22 semi. Several variations out there.
Very customizable with plenty of aftermarket products.

.22 is still pretty hard to find on the shelves. Why not get an AR?

        Ruger 10/22. It's the AR of 22s

Can't beat a 10/22 for a first rifle. Many variations to choose from and a endless accessories.

For a AR, take a look at the M&P Sport or the Ruger AR-556.

Used bolt gun with a scope .
the best learning platform is one where you focus on each shot, not just burn ammo.

            YMMV

Ruger 10/22 is a good choice. A LOT of aftermarket up grades though they are 'ok' out of the box.

Savage mark II for a cheap decent bolt gun.

CZ 452 American for a NICE bolt gun.

A 3-9 or 4-14 scope would be fine.

Personally, I'd recommend tuning up a ruger 10/22 with aftermarket bolt buffer and a VQ (volquartzen) sear if you want semi auto.

Between the bolt guns, savage is decent and cheaper, the CZ is WAY nicer.... if you're not on a really tight budget, I'd recommend the CZ WAY over the savage.

(I really like my M&P 15-22, but would not have made it my first choice.)

Marlin 795 is an option, and a great value.

I think this is great advice. Semi auto is better than bolt action but for a beginner who is just learning and doing recreational plinking, I think a bolt action or lever action might be perfect.

Its too easy with semis to just start blasting away and waste ammo.

+1 on the 10-22 but shop for an old one new ones have a lot of plastic even the trigger housing and the receivers are only painted.

My first gun was a ruger 10/22 semi auto.

If it is your first 22LR then 10/22 because no matter what you get after, everyone should have at least one 10/22.
