    A fun weekend then 2A & schools

This past weekend was great. I spent about 9 hours on the range instructing somewhere between 40 and 50 Boy Scouts and Venture Crew members.

I got home last night to hear that one of my son's teachers (6th grade in ultra conservative <sarcasm> Santa Clara County) asked him to write about what he did over the vacation week. Of course my son wrote about spending the weekend on the rifle & shotgun ranges.

For whatever reason the teacher didn't collect the writings. Potential chat with the principal averted?

That got me thinking about "The Talk". No, not the sex one, the guns one. We've actually had that before, but I found myself reminding him this morning that this isn't an appropriate topic for school; that it can freak out teachers, administrators, etc.

Now I'm sitting here wavering. All weekend I was wearing a "Free men don't ask permission to bear arms" patch. Dammit, its a *RIGHT*. How can I convince him it is a *RIGHT* while telling him that its a bad choice to write about such things at school? Maybe I can't. Dam, this living in a very anti- area is getting old fast.

I'm interested in hearing from other parents in liberal school districts about how they handle this.

...and this was playing on my drive home from the morning school drop off:

Its not about being afraid, its about being smart and avoiding an unnecessary incident that in this state, and in this period of time, you may have no way of winning or coming out of it unscathed.

Been there responding to questions from the principal.

When the school decides they have more rights to your child then you do is when things get interesting.

M1A Rifleman, thank you for a great way to explain the situation to my son. What you said is really clear and succinct. He'll get it.

Also found that if you play their game and act like you agree with them and their ideas/ideals, then they are on you and calling about every incident that happens with the kid during the day.

After having enough of this, I went the other way with them one time. In one case of a school yard bully/fight incident, I stated that I encouraged my kid to put down his adversary by any means necessary, and if the other kids parents wanted to see me about it, I'd wait around in her (principals) office. I never got a call from her about my kid again.
