    Safe queens maintenance question

Some guns I clean and use more often than others. Now that my collection is larger than a functional regular use toolset, I'm wondering about safe queens and keeping them in grade-a condition.

I'm in OC, it's mostly dry, and I use desiccate extensively. How long do you guys leave a firearm in the safe without cleaning?

Do you have a dehumidifier in your safe?

Clean or go through the safe and molest, wipe down with oily tag and put back ?

        I clean only after shooting.

When I go to the safe and if I handle any guns for any reason I wipe them down with a soft cloth that has oil in it. Some of the long guns with nice wood get. silicone socks. I have a dehumidifier in my safe and I'm in eastern alameda country. Mostly dry year round. Been 5 years with that safe and no issues. I'm in and out of it at least once a week or more. Some of the family inherited guns and other stuff I never shoot is in the back and is never handled. Therefore never wiped down. But they were all cleaned after last shoot or when I inherited them.

          Bore store gun socks
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

I try to shoot, clean and oil each firearm at least once a year. Some obviously get more use than others but those "safe Queens" get out at least once every 12 months.

If they were my guns, I would check on them every month or so.
(just to be on the safe-side)
Besides that gives you an excuse to have some "me time".

I brought my two safe queens out this last weekend for their semi-annual shoot and cleaning.

I inherited a couple of other safe queens that each sit in a silicon gun sock. I would like to shoot them more often but the ammo is very hard to find and expensive. These are Remington pump rifles in Rem 30 and Rem 32.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

probably as important as anything else in providing proper care of guns in long-term storage is setting up an inspection schedule of guns being stored and adhering to it.

one rust accelerant that is totally avoidable is having your bare finger being the last thing to touch the metal of a gun before long-term storage.

i run a GoldenRod inside my primary gun safe. once set up and running, there is no maintenance required for use of the GoldenRod.

I go thru every gun, once a year and wipe them down with G-96..this includes a wet patch down the bore...then back into their "Bore Stores" Ive got guns over a hundred years old that look near new. Due to living in No OC,I don't bother with golden rods or dessicant..Its just not that humid in the upstairs room where the safes are. I swear by G-96..they carry it at bass-pro

Like he said. Even if using only one magazine, give the safe queens some exercise and a thorough cleaning once a year.

When I had safe queens (all sold) I would store them in a light coat of oil and a bore patch tied over the muzzle. Once every couple months I would inspect them but never had trouble. A pile of silica packages or a dehumidifier in the safe is a good idea regardless.

Poly Bags work excellent. I have had one firearm in one for 5+ years and it is in perfect condition. They were made for long term storage and work.

I don't really have safe queens except for maybe my 870 (not a huge shotgun fan). I shoot often enough that my guns are cleaned and lubed a few times a year. I use MPro7 cleaner and weaponshield for lube. When I'm done cleaning my guns, I'll rub weaponshield all over the outside of the guns and wipe them down. It'll leave enough of a film to provide protection. My safe also has a rechargeable dehumidifier that I charge once a week.

I had an incident very recently. It wasn't a safe queen but I had a small layer of surface rust on some metal. The gun happened to be immediately adjacent to the desiccant pot in the bottom of the safe so I think maybe it was getting moisture from that. From now on, I keep about 3-4" clear around the desiccant.
Everyone on Calguns keeps talking about TDS. I never knew we had so many fish keepers!

The TDS on my 10gallon tanks 110ppm
The TDS on my 29 gallon tank is 150ppm (due to substrate)
