If you have the buckets, might as well use them. Instead of sand, go to home depot or the local garden supply, and buy a bag of vermiculite. It's much lighter than dirt or sand, and won't flow out the holes as readily.

The bucket should exhibit some motion on impact, and will dispense some vermiculite from the existing holes, providing visual feedback. A lid or cover of some kind for the bucket would be advisable, as an open vessel may "erupt" a large quantity of the vermiculite out the top.

5 gallons is approx. .67 cu ft, so don't buy too big a bag........

I've shot an old mortar can filled with dirt using pistols and rimfires. It definitely wasn't a reactive target but it was going to scrap anyway and it was kind of a neat way to recover the bullets.

Man shaped steel target (ar500) Makes a loud ding, lasts years (if not using some crazy penetrator round too close) No messy tattered up junk to haul home and find a trash can to dump in.

I shoot paint cans filled with water. A paint can is roughly the same the size as a human head. You can even put a hat on them.

For about $25 you can have a very satisfying reactive target with bonus audio feedback that will last years longer than a bucket of dirt.

With a little bit of art skill you got yourself a Panda Bear target there.

Where are you getting metal 5 gal buckets? The only ones I see these days are used for flammable or haz mat items. Most ranges and BLM lands don't allow you to shoot chemical containers.
