Gun Cabinet Selection tips?

I'm looking for a nice quality wood long gun cabinet with a glass window and a locking door.

(I know lots of people are proponents of safes, but I don't want one; so lets not go there. I like to display my rifles (most are old), I'm not concerned with theft, I don't keep ammunition in the house, we don't have children and none of our local friends or family have children.)

I want the glass door for the the display and the lock to prevent casual curiosity from visiting guests.

The problem I've found is most are poorly made... so I've started to watch craigslist. I'm also considering having one made.

Any comments / ideas? Suggested brands or manufacturers?

You just need to keep looking on CraigsList and other listings in your area. There are probably a lot of them sitting in garages and storage units of people who bought safes. Try posting “Wanted” adds on Craigslist.

I have found one high quality cabinet so far. All maple and no fiberboard. Made in the 70s. But a bit too colonial for me... I'm hoping to find something in a more craftsman style.

Most schools in CA haven't had shop programs for years now. Kind of weird to wake into the English classroom and see an air duct system along the ceiling and cement floors.

I agree with find a wood worker and have one made. What area are you in, someone here may know a guy that might be able to do it for you

edit: Ah... but now that I'm awake... there is NO way this will fly in the local schools. The wood shop being a "proponent" of firearms? This will never work. That fact that I considered it says something about my age!

Some school districts kept their shop equipment and have ROP (trade school) for the kids and adult education in the evenings.

Look for unfinished furniture places. They usually have them.

FYI, and to wrap up, I found a great cabinet on craigslist. Made by Harbor House in the 70s, very good quality, all real maple wood, no particle board.
There is another available, Identical to the one I bought also on craigslist in San Marcos. I haven't seen that one, but if you are in the market and in that area it's worth a look.
