GunWorks in Pleasant Hill is closing

A small shop that's always been a good place to shop for consignments, do PPTs, and my favorite, the several gunsmiths that worked there is closing. I believe they will close up by the end of May.
I found out today while I was picking up a PPT.
Sad to see them go. There's always City Arms East down the street but these guys were old school and I always felt like family with them.
Never a good day when a LGS closes.

I work not far from there. Are the gunsmith's prices good?

Diablo Valley Gun works across from the Casper Hot Dog place?

Not a good place to get gunsmithing done.

That's the place. There was an ownership change some years ago. The new guys were much better.
As for the smiths there, I always got good work done and pricing seemed fair.
At one point, there were four or five different guys working there.
Curious if the criticism was due to quality of work or a people skill issue?

I need a pin and weld job done. Can they handle that (provided they're still accepting work)?

At the time (which was 10 years ago, now) it was both. Promised the job would be done in 2 weeks (or something) and went to pick up the rifle. Job (drill & tap & scope mounting) wasn't done. I would've expected a call to say "give us more time".

When I picked up the rifle, they used different bases (it was a Unertl), charged for it, and didn't give back the old bases.

Gun Works staff are good guys, whenever I've been there it was mainly positive. They have been harassed by anti-gun "activist" lunatics for years. I plan to stop by to make a purchase before they're gone, and wish them well.

This is a sad day. I haven't been in the area THAT long, but since I moved out here in 2000 I've shopped at all of these that I consider "in the area":
                Hogans Sporting Goods
                Walmart (ammo only)
                KMart (ammo only)
Sierra Gun Works (mostly smithing) (name?)
                Diablo Valley Gunworks (mostly smithing)
The shop in downtown WC that seemed to mostly sell offlist revolvers

                Sports Authority
                Big5
                Canyon Sports
                Our Kitchen Table in Martinez
                Lefty in Antioch
                Antioch Arms

I'm sure longtime residents can remember many others.

Now, on a very local basis we are down to two large chain stores, Canyon Arms, Martinez Kitchen Table and have the AWESOME addition of City Arms, but the last 15 years have definitely left us with fewer options.
If it was a snake, it would have bit me.

Last year, the gunsmith told me a job would take 2 weeks, needed 8, and got angry whenever I asked him if he'd be done soon or if he could tell me how much longer he needed. The fellows in the front were friendly enough, despite that they had a... unique perspective on some CA laws. That's all I'll say.

The Bay Area needs more gun shops, so while I'm not personally broken up to see them go, it doesn't bode well for the future when there are less and less places to go.

Did they charge you extra for that?

Not a loss. Poor service and lousy prices.

I have to disagree, I have had some good experiences there. Yes i had dropped off two pistols that took a bit of time for repair. My colt was finished in 2 weeks, and had to have a pin drilled out (not easy), and my ruger was delayed, due to lack of parts for my mark 1. They ended up milling a new extractor and pin for the mark. Price of work was 90 for the colt, and 100 for the ruger.

When i got a ruger hunter, i didnt have any 22's. Mike sold me a box of federal 525, for only 40.00 otd. He could have reamed me, but,no took care of me.

They actually loaned me a mag for my marki, so i could go shooting with it. I didnt have a mag, it was stolen along with other firearms. I returned the mags, cleaned, about two weeks later.

Today i dros'd a sks. I joked about needing a second so i dont have to fire the russian one i was trading. Out from the back came a nice chinese sino. Very good condition, for the whopping price of 300.00.

So sad to see them closing come june. Reason i was told, retiring and the city of Pleasent Hill is being jerks about shutting them down. Guess the city rezoned, n claim the gun shop is too close to school, church, etc.. Shame really. Seen they had some nice deals on some used pistols. Glock for 400 otd think it was a .40? didnt look at the pistols, as i had spent more than i wanted... 35.00 turned into 335.00. Lol

Meh, long story short, they misplaced a gun I had shipped to them for over a week, claiming it never showed up. It had showed up, but some dip sheet threw it in the bottom of one of their safes and never said anything.

Too bad Bill sold the shop to Ken.

The shop will not be missed in my book.

Their Yelp reviews say it best.
