    CCW - Educate me!

Theres lots of talk going around lately regarding CCW and it stirred up my curiosity.

I have vaguely researched it in the past and if I remember correctly, the Sheriff of one's county is the issuer of CCW permits. Correct?

I hear the word "qualify" with regards to obtaing this liscense. This leads me to believe its not something that any Joe Blow could obtain just becuase he wants to carry a gun. That being said, do you need a "good reason" or special circumstances to obtain a CCW license? If so, what type of circumstances?

What about Open Carry. Does CA permit Open Carry? Does it require similar "qualifications"?

I am just curious about these carry permits and would appreciate any information or personal stories you could share with me.

    Thanks
    Dear California,
I love you. I was born and raised in you. You have given me some of the best times of my life. Now with that said, I can not wait to move!
    Your prisoner,

Hmm. I don't usually do this, but please use the 'search' button - it's at the top of the page, on the line that starts "User CP".

For plain vanilla CCW, try http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/in...ed_Weapon_(CCW)

For the rest, Lots of information here.
ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

I just base that on my neutered AR's and AK.

At least we are closer to full-featured semi-automatic rifles than we are to shall-issue concealed carry.

You need a good reason for a carry permit in California, and your reason is rarely good enough.

Which makes me question where you got this info from as you apparently don't know about ccw's in California.

You must first apply with local PD for your city of residence. PD will issue permit or letter of denial, in that letter they will state that they do not mind if your county sheriff issues. You take that to sheriff office of your county of residence. You will need a good cause statement, that statement may be approved or not, different sheriffs will approve different good cause statement, it varies by county, some are pro issue others are not. In a minority of counties, it is who you know, how much you contribute to the sheriff campaign, or if you area movie star. Sad but true.
You will have to have a clean background, you'll have a background investigation, take training and pass some kind of weapons test which varies by county. Most of all, a good cause statement that meets the specs for that sheriff.
Some counties, it is a waste of time, a DEBRA process, (Denial by run around ), they will take a long time, some times over a year to process the paperwork, others will treat you reasonable or even will treat you with respect. It really is where you live as to the key component. Historically the state of CA. has a spotty record which reflects badly on some sheriffs. You will deal with the human factor, which sometimes is accentuated with men in uniform. Sometimes they behave like shining stars, most just like flesh and bones, a few somewhat shameful. Good luck
I got most of this info from lurking in www.calccw.com

Bladerunner: applying for a CCW with the Local PD may be a formality that has been worked out over the years that essentially keep friction between the PD Chief and the Sheriff down to a minimum. Some PD's want that. Some don't care if you go to them first or to the Sheriff first. I think this is purely a local issue.

The ccw system statewide is screwed; don't let my comments lead you to believe otherwise.

Having said that, there are many counties (not L.A. or bay area mind you) that will issue to its residents freely, unless you give them a reason not to issue.

You just have to get away from what some of us people up North call "idiot land".

Humboldt is great (if you can deal with the rain and hippies) and is very scenic.

The sheriff of my county has only rejected 2 applicants in the last 2 years and they were because the people tried to claim residence when they in fact "lived" in CoCo county.

I carry daily and for those that are not able to I can tell you it is nice
