In 2012 I bought a Smith and Wesson M&P15ORC. I got it for less-then-reasonable reasons. I payed way to much and to be honest I didn't even really want it. But I got one. All my shooting buddies have AR15s, and I fell victim to all of the jeers, the warnings of impending bans and my (somehow) lack of patriotism for not owning an AR style rifle. Almost as if it is my DUTY as a US citizen to own an AR.
Fast forward to recent months. Rifle sits in safe, not even broken in yet (300 rds). As a single parent I cant even afford to shoot it. I decide I want to sell/trade my "precious" black rifle and use the funds to take the next step in personal self protection and that of my family (CCW). I ask for a used sub-compact and $400 cash. I tried every outlet imaginable. I tried friends, family, Armslist, Gunbroker, local gunshops, even Calguns. No dice. But LOTS of lowball offers (I just couldn't take $300-$400 on a gun that I (stupidly) spent $1200 on). Finally, as my CCW class rapidly approaches, I give in and trade a pawn shop straight across for a BNIB M&P Shield in .40s&w (they had to order it for me). Now all I hear from almost everyone I tell this story to is how they would have given me a "way better deal" and how foolish I am for getting rid of my "mighty AR15". But you know what? I am happy I did it. I am getting the gun that fits my needs, even if i got "hosed". Seems like nobody was interested till it was gone, and now everybody wants to berate me for my decision. Oh well, I'm happy to be rid of it. Can't wait till my 10 days are up and I pick up my Shield....
