Below is a copy/paste I found on BARF (Bay Area Rider's Forum). I thought it very interesting but I have no idea if the numbers presented are in the ballpark. Comments?

Preaching to the choir bro. Lets look at the numbers: (this isn't pointed to you Ernie, it's to others on this thread)
In 2011 there were 32163 gun DEATHS
In 2011 19766 of them were SUICIDES.
That leaves us with the real number of gun DEATHS, MURDERS, as SUICIDES should not and do not count. SUICIDES do not impact "others" in the way that it increases your "likelihood to be killed by a gun" or anything like that -- which is what medias love to say. "You are 8X more likely to be killed by a gun than by anything else in all of europe" or whatever.
So, we're at 12397.
In 2011, almost 900 of those were accidental deaths. So we can remove that too.
In 2011, almost 700 of those were JUSTIFIABLE homicide. In other words, self defense.
Yes, the media uses JUSTIFIABLE homicide stats as "gun death" stats. Same as they do with SUICIDE by gun. All to try to make your "likelihood of being killed by these HORRIBLE devices" seem higher than normal.
So here we are, we're left with 10500 gun deaths, which were unjustified. Let's assume they're murders or driveby's or manslaughter or something other intentional -- or crimes committed with a gun where someone died.
Now, lets dig deeper. How many of those were gang crime? Do you consider yourself at risk to be killed by a gang member? Are you a gang member?
According to the Center for Disease Control, almost 9000 of the 11,200ish murders by guns were gang related.
That means the real world total of law abiding citizens who were victimized by guns and killed by them, is 2,200. a year. 2,200 out of 300,000,000.
Do you honestly think we should be disarming law abiding citizens because 2,200 law abiding citizens, out of over 300,000,000 are killed by guns each year?
Do you honestly think we should be disarming law abiding citizens because 19000+ people decided to kill themselves and no one else, on purpose, with INTENT? They pose no threat to you, in anyway shape or form.
Do you honestly think we should be disarming law abiding citizens because of 900 accidental gun deaths per year, out of 300,000,000 guns in the U.S.?
What about the fact that if we disarmed the public, 700 more people who used justifiable homicide to protect themselves would be dead?
The real number of actual deaths is unbelievably low. You are more likely to die in a bar fight, or tripping on a fire hydrant, than being killed by a gun in the U.S. Unless you are a gang member or suicidal, of course.
Do you genuinely care about gang members or suicidal people? Are you willing to give up your constitutional rights for them? I'm not. And frankly, I openly admit -- I don't give a **** about people who want to kill themselves or gang members.
I care when they injure other people, who are good people. In that case, we're talking about 2,200 people -- a year -- out of 300,000,000+ people. That's 0.073 people per 100,000 (using 300,000,000 as our population).
I'm sorry, that's not worth neutering everyone over, it really isn't. You'd get farther by banning cars.
