Has Anyone Been To Front Sight? How Was Your Experience?

    Hello,

I had the opportunity to take the four-day handgun course in late February of 2015. I loved it! I have always considered myself a good shot, but after the course, my skills have improved tremendously.

There were 32 students in our classroom. On day four, we had the student-on-student Front Sight competition, where accuracy and speed is necessary. I and another man made it to the finals. It was he and I competing for the Front Sight top shot coin. He was using his HK and I was using my Kimber Super Pro Carry HD 1911 .45

I was ahead of him by two seconds. At the very last shot to win, my Kimber jammed! I tapped and racked once, nothing. I tapped and racked again, nothing. After the second tap and rack, my opponent had caught up and won me. My pistol started to function after he won! I sent my pistol in to Kimber and found out the extractor was loose. I was pissed off! I managed to return that pistol to the FFL and was given a new Kimber Pro Carry HD, fresh off Kimber’s assembly line (pistol manufacture date 02/12/2015). I’m about to head back to Front Sight and whoop everyone to receive my coin! LOL

Have any of you been to Front Sight? What was your experience?

I am too turned off by the goofy carnival barker marketing to bother with them.

My other two Kimbers have functioned flawlessly. This new Kimber Super Pro Carry HD functions flawlessly too.

If you visit HK's Pro forum, they have their share of failures too. The fact is my opponent was lucky that my Kimber jammed.

As they say at FS: "You do not know, what you do not know!"

I've been going there since 2000, and have learned that I can always be better than I THINK I am!

Last class was 4-day Tactical Shotgun in Febuary, Wow, what alot of fun!
Taking 2-day Defensive Handgun with the wife and some first timers on April 10th.
P.S. Just got a e-mail from the goofy carnival barker, there is going to be 800 students taking classes that weekend! He must be doing something wrong.

I love Front Sight. I went to it with a jaundiced outlook thinking it would be taught by a bunch of ego maniacs (like some firearms training venues) but was pleasantly surprised when there was no drill sergeant mentality. I managed to get DG a couple of times and I'm completely happy with that. From here on out, I want to get a jump on getting home (San Diego) at a reasonable hour, so I will likely forego the end of course skills tes. I'm happy with a Certificate of Achievement. I have three trips planned for the rest of the year and I'm considering another one next month.

You are the Weapon, your gun is just a tool!

After 4-days of tactical shotgun, about half of the class either experienced malfunctions, parts falling off their weapons or complete break downs!
Not only is the training good, but it's a great way to test the reliability of your tools.
The staff is always helpful and professional. Most people after going the first time, don't need much encouragement to buy a membership, the facility and the training sells itself! IMHO!

they moved the skills test on the 4d handgun class to before lunch on day 4, moving the man-on-man and multiple target to afterwards. that way you cna still test out and leave at lunch.

not sure about rifle and shotgun if they have it moved before lunch normally. my friend said his class was going so fast that they did do a skills test before lunch but i don't know if that is normal.

Out of curiosity, which shotguns were giving the most trouble (manufacture)? I'm actually thinking of signing up for the course. I also want to take their AR15 course.

The wife and I went last spring and we had a fantastic time!!! Been planning another trip ever since. The training, facility and instructors are all top notch. NO egos there (except your tactical ninjas who know more than anybody, but can't put two shots in the center at 5 yards). As they say, the people who think they know everything don't know what they don't know.

OP, congrats on almost getting your pin. You have something to shoot for next time. I made it to the second to last round. So, as a fairly novice shooter, I was happy with that. My Les Baer served me well.

                            Happy shooting and be safe.

My shooting partner's Remington 870's rear sight kept coming loose and then lost the front sight half way through the skills test.
Remington 1100's were malfunctioning on the third day. (getting gummed up)
The range staff were hosing them down with oil and working the slides.
I saw a couple of Mossbergs (I think they were 590's?) break, with one unrepairable just before the skills test!
Also saw Aimpoints coming off, on day two because of hardware coming loose.
My Benelli M4 had the Mesa Tactical stock screws come loose. (my fault for not putting blue loc-tite on them) I got it fixed just before the skills test. The FS armour fixed it for me for FREE! (never cleaned my M4 and had zero malfunctions after 600+ shells)
I'm going back again on Oct. 23 (missed DG by a few points!)
I've taken the Handgun & Rifle courses, but there's something very cool about shooting steel with 00 Buck & Slugs!
