You need a evil black rifle!

You sold the cz and kept the beretta?

As others have recommended, a revolver. A Ruger in .357 would be my suggestion and within your budget.

Do you currently reload? You could get a nice setup going with $750 and then you could really afford to shoot the **** out of your current guns. Ammo would also be much more affordable in the event you find yourself in a similar predicament in the future.

Actually when I sold everything, I pared my collection down to a Glock 19 and a Ruger 10/22. That's all a man really needs. But yes, when it came time to start rebuilding my collection, I did choose the better-built, more ergonomic option. By the way I have friggin enormous hands so I actually LIKE the Beretta grip.

I'm going to break from the herd and say I think you should start a .22 tack driver build. Makes the most sense to me since you already owned a lot of different rifles/shotty but pared it down to handguns and one 10/22. A nice .22 rifle is welcome at any range and is good cheap fun (so long as you can find the ammo that is). Also, you're going to be keeping your rifle skills sharp. Best way to start is build your own and you can stop before you invest too much if your interests change. A good start would be to look at Kidd and Volquartsen. $750 will go along way towards a nice customized rifle if you go with Kidd. Go with volquartsen and you'll have a friggin homing laser but it's going to cost you.

That's what black rifles in the other 49 states are like.

                        In California it's:

bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang...... okay wait here.... lemme stick the prong in the hole.... oh wait I didn't quite get it.... okay there we go.... okay magazine is out, now I can finally put a new one in

And don't even get me started on featureless builds. That's "put a helicopter hat on your head and run up and down the aisles of the grocery store making farting noises with your tongue" levels of retarded.

Unless you kept all your old CZ highcaps, forget any high cap hangun. It's just too depressing to use 10 rounders and still have a fat grip. A rifle would require you go to a different range to shoot from your handguns now.

Do the shotgun, preferably a gas autoloader. Nice and lightweight, yet still soft-recoiling.

That's for damn sure. When I originally lived in CA (born and raised), I was begrudgingly okay with 10rd mag limits, bullet buttons, featureless, etc. Moving out to free America and then back to CA has completely soured me on all the Californication and changed my perspective. I hate bullet buttons and I hate having to use 10rd mags in guns that were obviously designed for more. Hence the Springfield 1911, which is my most recent purchase. When in Rome, do as the Romans do...

Another problem is that I shoot left-handed due to eye dominance, so anything semi-automatic I have to be very selective based on ergonomics and shell ejection

Definitely leaning towards a shotgun or a souped up 10/22. Decisions, decisions...
