    Sheridan pellet gun - help

have a sheridan pellet gun from late 70s. always kept two pumps in it while storing, or sitting. Its always been used periodically to get rid of pests and birds or whatever. Now it will take one pump, and when you try to pump the second pump, the forearm handle wants to fling open when trying to put second pump in. When you open handle all the way, you dont hear as much hiss from the piston grabbing air. Also, no matter how many times you attempt to pump it, it only builds up one pump. I think something isn't closing or holding the first pump of air in the resevoir while you try to grab the second 3rd 4th... pumps. Anyone have any ideas on whats going on or what needs to be done to fix this thing?

It could probably use a cleaning and lube job. I'd strip it down, check everything, lube and reassemble. Sheridan stuff is usually pretty simple.

No, it's a PITA to take it apart. You need a special tool to get the guts out of it, most of the parts are NLA, so you have to send it to someone that has paid to have the parts made, or has a NOS of parts. I've had mine for 50 years, and the furthest I could get it apart was to remove the rubber cup. This was 7 years ago, there wasn't anything on the net about the special tool WITH dimensions to make it; that was a well kept secret.

Now, somebody has posted the dimensions, so you can make your own tool.

But you're right, it needs to come apart and be cleaned and lubed.

Send it to Sheridan. They are the experts.

I had a similar problem several years ago with an old Sheridan Blue Streak that has been in the family since the early 70s. I foolishly attempted to take it apart to find out whats wrong and fix it. Big mistake - airguns are a very different critter than regular guns and unfortunately I quickly made the problem worse. After much research, I sent it to Mac1 Airgun shop and had them do the steroid service to it. Tim is a great guy and a guru of airguns - he not only fixed the Blue Streak, his steroid treatment took it to the HNL (hole nutha level). Now it takes half as many pumps to fully charge and it hits much harder than it ever used to. I heartily endorse Mac 1's steroid service.
          Good luck.

Sheridan disappeared 30+ years ago; bought by Benjamin. Then Benjamin was bought by Crossman. Crossman wants you to buy a new gun, so they don't mess around with the vintage stuff. Mac1, among others, is who you work with to get them fixed.

All of the valve parts are the same as some of their paintball gun parts, of which there is a paintball company still making parts for sheridans. They also sell a valve tool as well. I used to play paintball with all the old sheridan paintball guns and they are pretty darn simple, even if it requires a tool.

OP, if you decide to try to do it yourself, Palmers Pursuit sells paintball parts and should have any necessary tools/seals necessary to get it running again.

If you want to send it out, Tim MacMurry at Mac1 airguns is probably the best airsmith around for airguns. (Sidenote: He actually got his start working on old sheridan paintball guns. )

Aren't paintball guns powered by a compressed gas cartridge? Isn't that a lot different from pumping up the pressure? Like a Blue Streak? I never thought to search paintball gun repair, that it would be like a 40+ year old pellet gun!

I just looked at the link you provided; I spoke to that guy at a Sacto Gun Show, years ago. He was selling the Sheridan reseal kit, didn't mention a thing about paintball...

Well pressure is pressure. The pump mechanism is slightly different on a blue streak compared to a sheridan paintball gun(which use little co2 cartridges). But the actual valve seals are the same. The paintball guns I'm talking about are the ones that started the sport, from the 80's. This is a sheridan KP2 paintball rifle:

Notice how they look like blue streaks? The only major difference is this uses 12gram co2 cartridges instead of a pump. Sheridan shared much of there valve parts across many of their rifles.

Palmers has been in business for many years and has branched out into much of the pneumatic market. They make some of the best high pressure air regulators available.

thanks galt, klewan, and everyone else. i'll look into mac or his parts, odds are i'll attempt it myself. i did see a utube video about making the special tool , but it was for benjamin. i'll have to research it more, and am interested about this extra power steroids stuff. right now i got a little band of birds eating the dogs food and making a mess. sounds like the thing needs to be seriously torn into, i was hoping someone could pin point it from what i described. thanks
