    keeping mags loaded ?

Is it bad for the springs to keep the magazines loaded to full capacity ?

Should we leave them empty, fill them partially, or to full capacity. I kind of want to have them loaded just in case but don't want to ruin the springs.

    thanks

The springs wear out with use i.e. loading and unloading. So keeping them loaded won't wear out the springs.

This was covered about a week ago, I'm sure you could find this thread if you searched for it.

I download all my mags by either one round or two, but this is only to make mag changes easier with the bolt/slide forward. The springs will last either loaded or unloaded. However, the feed lips might eventually get worn out if your mags are always loaded to capacity. I have had that happen to some of my ten round mags.

            Yes.... old wives tale.

Modern spring steel fails due to fatigue failure (cycling) not compression deformation.

I have 4 H&R Reising 20 round mags, 2 of which my dad had loaded up to capacity for almost 25 years. No doubt they were over 20 years old when he got them back in 1969, but they still work as fine as the other two do.

If we were more like europeans, we'd have a percentage cut from every CalGuner's income, to pay for a person to take the position of the "search for me beyotch" to compile answers previously gone over.

Instead, we do it the cheap way and out of the goodness of our heart, we search for you. If you're extra lucky, we'll post links, too.

I have keeped my normal cap glock mags fully loaded for 7 years and they are still on their first spring and function fine. I don't see the point in underloading mags. They are already compressed what is a smig more going to hurt. Plus I'd rather have a couple extra rounds in a firefight and just buy new springs every couple years. I don't think it it will hurt your springs any more if you load 8 rounds then if you load 10. My grandfather has a PPK and mags that have been fully loaded since 1945 and they still function just fine.

WHAT do you use them in? You don't have a Reising in Cali do you?

Sure do, H&R Reising Model 60. After the Watts Riots in August of 1965, and the subsequent federal investigation, LAPD was ordered to get rid of a good portion of their hardware that was deemed too "militaristic". From what my dad tells me, some CHP officer bought the lot, and was privately selling them to fellow CHP and LAPD officers and other city employees. My dad was a tow truck driver for an LAPD/CHP contract towing company, knew the officer, and bought one from him. My dad claims the guy had Reisings with finned barrels (Model 50's perhaps??) but wanted twice as much, so he didnt buy one. He also had LAPD marked shotguns, gas guns and other neat stuff.

Little did the brass know things would get worse, SWAT was formed shortly after, with more "militaristic" type weapons than those they were forced to get rid of.
