Thinking about shipping rifle to my father who has more room in his safe. Anyone ever done this? Is Fedex good for this?

You can use FedEx, FedExGround, UPS, or the US Postal Service to ship a rifle.

What are the legalities of shipping rifles from outside CA to inside CA? Let me clarify, my family member lives in another state. He has a rifle that he wants to bring out here to CA (its legal here) but he doesn't want to take it on the airplane when he comes, he wants to ship it. Can he ship to directly to me? As I'm reading this it seems like a stupid question but I guess this type of situation is one that the state has made me afraid of.

You can just go to the post office if you want instead of using a common carrier (like UPS or FedEx) when shipping a long gun.

He can mail it to himself in care of you. You cannot open the package. He must do that himself.

I'm shipping a long gun for repair to manufacturer. I read on FedEx's T&Cs that *all* firearms (regardless if handguns or long guns) need to be shipped next day air (you choose which, but has to be next day). UPS is a little more flexible so long as the firearm cannot be assembled into a firearm. Unfortunately, I'm shipping the entire rifle minus pistol grip and it has the Raddlock in there, with chamber indicator, no magazine and unloaded (of course)

                Questions:

                1) Anyone successfully use FedEx Ground to ship their long guns, meaning party shipping is not an FFL and shipping back to manufacturer or gunsmith for repair/gunsmithing work.

                2) If yes to #1, how'd you get around the FedEx company policy of the over-arching definition of firearm

Did you read the other posts in this thread. You can ship the rifle via USPS...yes, the post office. Don't waste your money shipping a rifle with UPS or FedEx. Make sure to declare the item, purchase insurance, and make sure they don't put any identifying marks or decals on the outside of the package that would indicate it is a firearm.

i shipped some parts via FedEx and carefully bubble wrapped the heck out of it... This was very lucky, because when the package got there it had a boot print on it as if somebody had stomped on it as hard as they could!

Some other good advice I have recieved about shipping stuff:

                      1) Make sure to also WRITE the destination address on the package, so if and when the sticker gets ripped off they have some identifying marks on it to send it on its way. Once they give you the tracking number you can write that up there too. When I did this the person at the counter complained and I explained what I was doing and why. Their response - yeah whatever *toss*

                      2) Bubble wrap bubble wrap bubble wrap...

hotrails... i wrapped that sucker well! i guess it pays i save those foam cuts, popcorn styrofoam, etc.

ohsmily, i don't like usps for these such things. i know you can ship there and i did read that btw.

FedEx ships everyhing by air, unless the address is in the local area. FedEx Ground is a separate subsidiary and they will accept rifles or shotguns for shipment. I have used them one time to ship a rifle from California to Tennessee.

There are different tariffs for each company.

They're not supposed to do that. You're only supposed to ship firearms through an official UPS shipping hub or arrange for a driver pick-up. A UPS Store isn't officially UPS, they're just a retail facade.

nevs83 - someone in another post said your father can ship the rifle addressed to himself to your address ... that's the way to do it.

But if you open the box before your dad gets there, the ATF will break down your door and arrest you. No really, they will. So whatever you do ... don't touch the box.
