Shipping ammunition to UPS store (rejected)

So, after reading a bunch of threads on this topic, I decided to order some ammunition online and have it delivered to a UPS Store in South San Francisco (because SF doesn't allow ammunition to be delivered).

I was a little scared of this happening, but today I checked the tracking # and it turns out the package has been "Refused by recipient", and is being sent back to my retailer. I did call the UPS store ahead of time and requested their package hold service, but I'm guessing it was rejected because they saw the ORM-D label.

Anyone have experience with this? I'm thinking that my last resort is to have it shipped to an FFL, but they don't seem very interested in doing this.

IIRC, you have to have it held at the closest hub for p/u. Stores won't hold or ship ammo for you.
    Sorry, not sorry.

The December 2014 version of the UPS rules can be downloaded from http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/service.html

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

Many UPS stores are privately owned - their lease and/or insurance may have restrictions.

If you're ordering a large amount, they might not have storage facilities for that in terms of safety or security.

x2 about having UPS hold it at their hub. No problems there.

It's worth pointing out that the "UPS Store" outfits that you sea in a lot of strip malls are not UPS facilities.

I know that they look like UPS facilities, they use the logo, and they connect their customers with UPS services, but those storefronts and not "UPS."

They're primary privately owned operations that have a contract relationship with UPS.

I learned this the hard way when one of those storefronts lost a package that I had delivered to them for shipment. UPS's position was that they never received the package, and therefore had no responsibility for its loss.

Hold for pick up at Hub is your best bet. I just did that couple weeks ago in San Jose with no issues.

I've had ammo held both at the hub and at my local UPS store, no issues. But the stores are franchises so YMMV in that regard (as obviously it did).

It'll probably be YMMV depending on whether or not the employees at the store even know what ORM-D means or if they even care.

I've picked up ammo at my UPS Store sent to me from Cabela's no problem.

As stated by others, before it gets sent all the way back to the place you ordered it from, have it held for pickup at the closest UPS hub. You can do this online with your tracking number. You'll have to drive to wherever it is, but it saves having to pay return shipping to get it back.

What you've heard from others is probably right. Most UPS stores are franchises. You should try to deal with an actual UPS facility from here on out.

I have gotten my ammo shipped to SSF UPS hub numerous times. No problem at all.

If you are not a boxholder at that UPS store, I don't believe they will accept packages for you. If you were a regular customer and had a mailbox there it wouldn't be an issue. I would guess the package showed up addressed to Joe Blow, and they said "we don't know this guy, send it back". Make sure you call UPS and have it held at the hub before it returned to the shipper.
