Is a Romak 991 legal in California if it was registered before January 2000 as an AW. It is my understanding it was still legal because the receiver would only accept a 10 round magazine. The gun owner has the original paperwork registering it with the DOJ. Further more does it now need to have a bullet button installed to be legal? The flow chart is a little confusing...

If it is a registered AW it's legal for the owner to possess/transport/shoot/etc.; nothing has changed. The owner cannot transfer it to anyone within CA unless that person can legally purchase an assault weapon and the transfer is done through a FFL who holds an CA AW permit.
No bullet button needed, this has nothing to do with the 10-round magazine capacity. These rifles were configured in a manner allowing them to be imported into the US at the time; that's where the 10 round configuration comes in. I own a RAW Romak 991 and I milled the magazine well and trunnion to accept standard AK magazines while I still lived in CA - still legal; this does not change the AW registration in any way.Last edited by Grumpyoldretiredcop; 03-05-2015, 12:53 AM.I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!
