    DROS and S/N

Do you need a serial number to DROS a rifle?

If that is true, than I am pissed at J and J armory. They have had my money (including DROS fees) for the lower for 7 days and won't start the DROS till the lower gets here.

Some places don't like to start the DROS until the firearm actually shows up. That's because sometimes the firearm doesn't show up when it is supposed to. Other times the firearm shows up but it is damaged or has a scratch or is the wrong model and the customer wants it sent back and replaced. Then the customer gets mad when he has to pay the DROS fee again because the 30 days are up.

If you tell an FFL that you will take the gun no matter what condition it arrives in or you will gladly pay a second DROS fee if something goes wrong then they will be more likely to start a DROS for you as soon as they get a tracking number and know for sure that the firearm has shipped.

if they told you they need the serial for the dros they were lying
when you get the dros sheet look it over and say where was the serial number entered? then
i would politely tell them i do not appreciate being lied to

make sure you have the goods before you do your thing though cause sometimes jerks don't like being proven wrong

I just want to say that I have always been treated right with the people over there at J&J armory. Then again I only deal with Ryan.

The serial number is recorded on the 4473, the paper you fill out with your name and then the "yes, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no" then sign. When you enter it into the computer for the backgroud check, there is no place for a rifle/shot gun SN.

I'd like to know if J&J was spreading FUD or not. They actually told you they needed a serial number to DROS a long gun or not?

If the OP is correct in what he is saying then something has changed.
I had no problem starting a DROS at J&J in the past (8/08) before the rifle arrived.

While you don't need a s/n to DROS a long gun (there is no place for it on the DROS form), I have had the DOJ tell me directly that the gun must be present before DROS can start. This was confirmed when I had my last audit because one of the first things the auditor did was compare his list of my open DROSes against what was on the shelf waiting to be picked up. When I asked what would have happened if the numbers didn't match up, he said it would have been a violation. Take that for what it's worth.

Interesting, I wonder if this is their opinion or actually a law? I have seen stuff get DROSed before w/o the gun being i the shop but I have never done that.

Well one time when I did a DROS at Walmart they did something weird like that but I did not tell them to do it.

No, they did not say anything about needing a S/N. They took my money and ordered the lower, not offering to DROS it. So today I called to see if they will DROS it before it gets here and I was told on the phone it came in yesterday (thanks for the call). So I went down today and DROS it and another for my son ( consecutive S/N, oohrah).

They also ask me if I had a gun safe During the final DROS questions, I think that is none of anyone's business (said yes of course).
