    Interesting read. Agree or disagree?

It's an interesting read, but the statements like "gun nuts shooting better" is way too broad. It would likely be better worded as "some civilians train and shoot better" with "some" being a key portion of that statement.

As far as why... seems kind of simple really. In a competitive environment where training is not required to conform to a standardized method of instruction that is extremely slow to change or adopt new techniques, people can try different things, communicate different ideas, and adapt what works( or throw out what doesn't) much quicker than the military.

That being said, it seems like most people can barely keep shots on a pie tin at 100 yards from a bench with front and rear support, even though they might be "gun nuts".

edit: It actually falls right in line with the topic discussed in this thread about the rifles themselves http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s....php?t=1040601

When I compete at Military Matches my heart sinks a little when Civilians are allowed to compete.

Why?(that's an actual question, it isn't rhetorical)

I don't like being labeled to as a nut. The term nut implies foolishness or craziness. I am a gun enthusiast.

My take away from the article:

            1) Just because one wears a uniform doesn't make one an expert at anything. Not really anything new there...

            2) Training needs to be as close as possible to actual combat and military training isn't always so. Again, nothing new there...

            3) The military doesn't like change. Nothing new there...

I think the take away from the article isn't necessarily what was explicitly stated, rather the more subtle aspect that it's actually being discussed(and not by someone with an attitude problem due to a bias from the military or civilian side of shooting).

It runs in my veins, I love my hobby and practice it like religion. All I think about is just shooting my rig. Work is work, Family has it's own place BUT! Tuning my rifle, Understanding my platform, Shooting as much as possible, Proper reloading discipline and quality components, Solid fundamentals, Pushing myself and my weapon of choice to its limits is what keeps me sane. This Art is more than steel and Plastic it's more that Brass and lead, It's Science, Physics, Biology, Mathematics, Meteorology I could go on for hours.
Gun Nut? Maybe the ones that buy for looks. Why a civilian can out shoot a trained military man? Beats me. Given the opportunity I hope I don't piss off anyone. Don't hate the player hate the game as one will love it and the other will be stuck on stupid.
                Peace

There are four questions of value in life... What is sacred? Of what is the spirit made? What is worth living for, and what is worth dying for.

Your average Solider, Seaman even Marine is in it for the job. Not the guns.
Most shoot/train only when they have to and pass the bare minimum.
                  Same with cops.

Ive known plenty of military. They go in, get their years in and leave. They couldn't tell you a thing about firearms.
Which is fine. But many think they are going in and becoming super warrior, firearms experts.

On the other hand, it's not that much of a stretch to suggest that it's foolish and crazy to acquire and keep over 100 firearms.

                    Gun nut here.

To the OP's question, I have often attempted to point out how, according to my experience, the average gun nut seems to be far more skilled than the average "professional trained" cop when it comes to firearms handling. If nothing else, the gun nut shoots a lot more than the cop. This should be self-evident, by try making the case to a journalist or a police union.
