You can still get a decent safe while living in an apartment.

Either the Stack-On or Sentry line of safes have models that are small and light enough to put into an apartment (even on the second floor).

If you get one of the models that weighs around 300 lbs, bolting it down to prevent the whole thing from being stolen isn't that essential (but it is still good advice). Once a large safe is full, it can weigh well over 500 lbs and getting something that large and heavy outside (or better yet, down a flight of stairs) would be a serious challenge to even a 2 or 3 man crew.

I started shopping around and channeling my inner Macgyver since I started this thread. I think I've come up with a pretty secure improvised safe device.

Walmart has a heavy duty truck bed container that's made out of pretty thick plastic. The container is large enough to fit more ammo and guns than I can handle. The plan is to put this container in my closet, fill the bottom with 200-300 lbs of weights, add ammo and guns, and throw a nice padlock on it. Since it's in the corner of the closet and weighed down, someone trying to pick it up will only be able to grip one edge of it.

I could easily move the stack on or cheap sentry safes by myself. They are worthless IMO. Kind of like gift wrapping all your guns for a thief. Even when bolted down. A screwdriver could easily pop one open. I would rather have a big wood box than a stack on. A huge quality safe, bolted to concrete is the only way to go if you hope to stop anything more than a smash and grab. For an apartment, I would just build a thick wood box with blind hinges and padlocks, fill the bottom with ammo, and it should be more than good enough for your purpose.

I have a safe in my upstairs office that weighs 870 pounds (empty). Unless you have a really bad termite problem, I wouldn't worry about any safe that will fit through the door.

For me, I'm thinking three firearms totaling up to $2000. What do you guys think?
Personally I'd be more concerned about my firearms getting into the hands of dirtbags than I would with monetary loss.
